WBBL 10 | Hobart Hurricanes pick Suzie Bates as replacement for Danni Wyatt-Hodge

With England players set to be unavailable for the second half of the competition, Hurricanes snapped up the legendary New Zealand batter

New Zealand women’s stalwart Suzie Bates found a new home in Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) on October 9 as the Hobart Hurricanes picked her as a replacement player for the second half of the 2024-25 season. Hurricanes picked up Bates with an eye on England’s international schedule, as Danni Wyatt-Hodge will be unavailable for the second half of the  season.

Earlier, Bates wasn’t picked in the draft, despite stints at Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers in the past.

"Bringing Suzie into our WBBL squad just made sense as soon as we saw she was not selected in the WBBL|10 Draft, we thought she would be the perfect replacement for Danni once we knew her availability,” said Salliann Beams, the General Manager of High Performance at Hurricanes.

Bates has the best numbers for any women’s player in the shortest format of the game, and her signing could be integral for the Hurricanes. Alongside the Kiwi, Hurricanes will also have the services South African duo of Chloe Tryon and Lizelle Lee as overseas players.

"She provides more than 130 games of World T20 cricket and will give us an experienced operator when we lose someone of Danni's ability in our line-up," Beams said.

The 2024 edition of the WBBL is set to kick off at the Adelaide Oval on October 27 with a clash between Adelaide Strikes and Brisbane Heat.
