After two days of no play, cricketing action finally resumed in Kanpur on Day 4 as the sun shone brightly, enabling the ground staff to make the conditions playable.
Bangladesh resumed the contest on 107/3 and, despite the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim early on, the first hour of play turned out to be rather dull. There was hardly any life on the surface — with most balls bowled by the pacers not carrying to the wicketkeeper — and the Bangladesh batters not keen to accelerate. In a way, both sides were going through the motions.
This was the time when team India skipper Rohit Sharma brought the game to life through a stunning one-handed grab that made the Green Park stadium go absolute bananas.
On the fourth ball of the 50th over, Litton Das took on Mohammed Siraj after deciding that he’d had enough. Litton’s first 29 balls had yielded just 12 runs and he was getting impatient.
And so the wicketkeeper-batter decided to give the charge and looked to thump Siraj over mid-off.
Litton, after dancing down the wicket, connected the ball sweetly and, for a moment, it looked like he had broken the shackles; the ball was traveling at a fair pace towards mid-off.
However, when it looked like the ball would certainly overpower the mid-off fielder and race to the boundary, Rohit jumped, stuck his hand out and pulled off a stunner.
Rohit could hardly believe what he’d just done. He held the pose for an extended period of time and started running in disbelief after that. His teammates, who were happily-shocked to say the least, then approached and mobbed him. All this while, Litton was standing out in the middle unable to process what just transpired.
A much-deserved, unexpected treat for the fans in Kanpur after two days of utter disappointment.
