Joe Root (128-ball 62*) batted with tremendous patience and got England over the line in a tricky run-chase on day four of the opening Test against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford on August 24 (Saturday).
Earlier, Kamindu Mendis (113) and Dinesh Chandimal (79) continued their overnight partnership, adding 117 runs for the seventh wicket, extending Sri Lanka’s lead to 185.
The second new ball, however, did the trick for England. Sri Lanka lost their last four wickets in the space of 19 runs and set England a target of 205.
The hosts lost three wickets for 70 runs but that’s when Root added 49 with Harry Brook and 64 with Jamie Smith to get England over the line. England won the game by five wickets and have now taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
