Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa, against whom an arrest warrant was issued by the chairman of the regional Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) on December 21 (Saturday) morning, issued a clarification statement regarding the same.
Uthappa, in a statement, said that he was not an executive member of the company in question, which did not submit their employee's EPF amount. Instead, the former IPL star, playing for the RCB, KKR and later on CSK and RR, said that he had filed countersuits against those companies for their unavailability to pay back his investment amount.
“In 2018/19, I was appointed director in these companies due to my financial contributions to them in the form of loans. However, I did not have an active executive role, nor was I involved in the day-to-day operations of these businesses.
"Given my demanding schedule as a professional cricketer, TV presenter, and commentator, I did not have the time or expertise to participate in their operations. In fact, I do not play an executive role in any other companies I have funded to date,” Uthappa said in the statement.
“Regrettably, these companies failed to repay the funds I lent them, leading me to initiate legal proceedings, which are currently sub judice. I also resigned from my directorship several years ago,” he added.
According to several media reports, the notice to Uthappa was served on December 4 as he was the Director of the company in question. But Uthappa clarified that the notice does not serve the EPFO's intended purpose.
“When the Provident Fund authorities issued notices demanding payment of dues, my legal team responded, highlighting that I had no role in these companies and provided documentation from the companies themselves confirming my lack of involvement.
Despite this, the Provident Fund authorities have continued with proceedings, and my legal advisors will take the necessary steps to resolve this in the coming days,” the 39-year-old said in the statement.
