Shubman Gill is living up to the hype of being the next big thing in Indian cricket, with plenty of runs across formats both for India and also the Indian Premier League (IPL). This year alone, Gill has notched up centuries across formats for India, including an ODI double ton, and in the ongoing IPL season, the stylish batter is the leading run-getter having accumulated 851 runs at 60.78, that includes three centuries and four fifties in 16 innings.
As a result, he has been compared with batting greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, but the 23-year-old is not getting carried away by it.
"See it's great when people see it but I don't really see that way because the generation that all of these people Sachin sir, Virat bhai and Rohit Sharma have inspired is beyond," Gill told ANI.
"Had we not won the 1983 World Cup, had there not been a Sachin Tendulkar....had we not won the 2011 world cup would I be as much inspired, maybe or maybe not. So, these kinds of legacies, things kind of things are immortal. you can't really define their legacies."
Gill's third ton of the season came in a crucial encounter against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad. The opener smashed 129 off just 60 deliveries to help his side to a massive victory.
The IPL 2023 final between Gill's Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was washed out on Sunday (May 28). As a result, the two sides will clash on Monday (May 29), which has been set aside as a reserve day.
