Travis Head fails to fire in middle-order on Sheffield Shield return

Head could only score 30 against New South Wales, ahead of the much-awaited series against India later this year

All those rumours of Travis Head being looked at as a potential ‘opening’ option were put to rest when he walked out in the middle-order for South Australia on October 9 (Wednesday) during a Sheffield Shield encounter. The 30-year-old came out to bat against New South Wales with the score reading 53/2, and was at his aggressive self during his stay at the crease.

Head smacked two sixes and two fours in his 44-ball stay at the crease, scoring 30 runs. The left-hander took on the young Tanveer Sangha, hitting two brutal sixes, one with a slog sweep and the other towards the long-on region.

If that wasn’t enough, the South Australian took on Jack Edwards for a couple of boundaries too. But ultimately his fun stay at the crease came to an end when he nicked one off Sangha’s bowling to the slip fielder Edwards. It required a really sharp reflex from Edwards to grab the ball.

While NSW would have hoped that Head’s dismissal would slow down the scoring rate, it wasn’t the case as Alex Carey, fresh off his heroics in England, took on the spinners in disdain fashion, smashing eight fours and four sixes, batting on unbeaten 73 off 67 balls, striking at 108.96, at the time of writing.
