Travis Head becomes first South Australian to captain Australia in T20Is

Head is the 13th man to lead Australia in T20Is overall, but the first from South Australia

History was scripted at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Friday (September 13) as Travis Head became the first South Australian to captain Australia in T20 Internationals (T20Is). Head was originally supposed to only feature as a specialist player, but an illness to incumbent skipper Mitchell Marsh meant that the 30-year-old was named as Australia captain for the second T20I of the three-match series against England.

Head is the 13th individual to lead Australia in T20Is overall, but the first from South Australia.

In this entire century, Alex Carey is the only other player from South Australia to lead Australia in an international game. Carey captained the Aussies in three ODIs against West Indies in 2021, all in Bridgetown.

The second T20I is Head’s first game as Australia skipper, but the 30-year-old is no stranger to captaincy in T20s. He’s led his Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Adelaide Strikers on 28 occasions, with his last stint as skipper coming in the 2022/23 edition of the BBL. Head was only 23 years old when he captained the Strikers for the first time, back in the 2017/18 season of the BBL.
