Former India captain Ajay Jadeja came to the rescue of his fellow Delhi and India player turned national team head coach Gautam Gambhir, saying that the time period and sample size of Gambhir the coach has been too small for people to pass judgements.
"I think you are being unfair to him... If you will start judging people based on their coaching role or whatever way it is being looked at, it is too short a time for people to be judged," Ajay Jadeja was quoted as saying to PTI.
"If you are not convinced that he is good, then one performance here or there will be able to convince anyone. I don't think it is the time to judge him, it is the time we should enjoy him," he added.
Since taking over as India's head coach after Dravid’s contract came to an end post the T20 World Cup 2024, Gambhir became the first Indian coach to lose an ODI series against Sri Lanka in 27 years. Only a few months later, he also became the first Indian coach under whom India suffered its first-ever 3-0 whitewash at home in Tests, that too against New Zealand.
But instead of criticising Gambhir’s policies, Jadeja said that when BCCI signed the former IPL-winning KKR captain and mentor, they knew what they were getting.
"You knew what you were asking for and what you were getting. He is a very clear-cut person and he has made it clear throughout his life. So, what you are seeing now is what everyone expected of him to do," said the man who featured in 15 Tests and 196 ODIs for the country, scoring 5935 runs across formats and picking 20 wickets as well.
Gambhir is currently overseeing the Indian team in Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where the visitors are 1-0 up in the five-Test series after winning the first Test in Perth.
