Temba Bavuma likely to miss Test series in Bangladesh

The batter sustained an elbow injury during the second ODI against Ireland

South African skipper Temba Bavuma could miss the two-match Test series in Bangladesh, ESPNcricinfo reported on October 6 (Sunday). The right-handed batter sustained an elbow injury during the second ODI against Ireland and will miss the third and final game of that series on Monday.

In Bavuma's absence, Rassie van der Dussen will captain South Africa in the final ODI, with Aiden Markram being rested for the series.

Bavuma got injured while batting in the second ODI on October 4 (Friday). The incident occurred on the fourth delivery of the 12th over when Bavuma pushed one towards mid-off and took off for a quick single. He eventually had to dive full stretch to cross the line but hurt himself in the process.

The Proteas skipper got some taping on his left arm but decided to leave the field only a couple of deliveries later. The 34-year-old retired hurt at the score of 35 off 39 and didn’t return to bat.

He had injured the same elbow in 2022 during the tour of India and was out of action for a few months. He has struggled with injuries in recent times.

Bavuma injured his right hamstring during the ODI World Cup in 2023 and then sustained a left hamstring injury against India last year.

The two-match Test series between South Africa and Bangladesh will get underway on October 21 in Dhaka. The second Test will be played in Chattogram from October 29.
