Suryakumar Yadav cleared to play final round of Duleep Trophy

The India batter had to sit out the first two rounds of Duleep Trophy so far as a precautionary measure after hurting his thumb

India’s swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav is all set to feature in the next round of the Duleep Trophy 2024 after sitting out the previous rounds due to thumb injury.

Surya was withdrawn from the squad before the first round of the tournament after he suffered a blow on his right thumb while fielding in the Buchi Babu invitational tournament in Coimbatore, earlier this month.

However the rest was precautionary in nature, and Suryakumar is now fully fit.

He will join the India B squad at Anantapur for the final round of the Duleep Trophy that is starting on September 18 (Thursday). He will replace Sarfaraz Khan in the Abhimanyu Easwaran led India B side. Sarfaraz meanwhile is part of India’s Test squad that will be beginning their home Test season in Chennai against Bangladesh.

While Suryakumar is India’s T20I captain, he has failed to make space for himself in the red ball scheme of things. He would look to perform in the last round of the Duleep Trophy to make a claim for a comeback in the Test side. With T20Is against Bangladesh beginning on October 6, it might make it hard for the 34-year-old to play for Mumbai in the first round of the Ranji Trophy, starting on October 11.

Meanwhile, India B would also require him to be at his best because they are currently second on the points table, and a win might help them win the 2024 edition of the Duleep Trophy.
