England Test skipper Ben Stokes will return to The Hundred after a three-year-long hiatus from the country's marquee limited-overs tournament. Stokes will play under the tutelage of Andrew Flintoff, who will take charge of the Leeds-based Norther Superchargers as his first-ever full-time job as a head coach.
As reported by ESPNCricinfo, the England Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have made Stokes available for the last four matches of the league stage and the knockout stages of the tournament if the Superchargers qualify.
Stokes, 33, played in the inaugural season of the competition under Faf du Plessis's captaincy. However, during that season, he fell on the bathroom floor of his hotel due to anxiety and took a one-year break from the game. He played only two matches that season ever since he has prioritized Test cricket and will now be making a re-entry into the 100-ball format.
Stokes will begin his ‘The Hundred 2024’ journey with an away fixture against Birmingham Phoenix on August 6.
The Hundred Men’s will begin on July 24 with the Oval Invincible taking on the Phoenix at the Kennington Oval in London. The Invincible are the defending champions, while Phoenix finished runners-up in the inaugural season.
Which players have been replaced by whom in the Hundred?
Naseem Shah was replaced by Tim Southee in the Phoenix squad after the former was denied the No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the Pakistan Cricket Board. James Neesham and Riley Meredith have been signed as part-time replacements for Zak Crawley and Joe Root at the London Spirit and Trent Rockets, respectively, until the end of the Third Test between England and the West Indies.
While the English batters will be able to play The Hundred straight away after the end of the Edgbaston Test, the all-rounders and bowlers will have to wait till August 6, when the second half of the tournament will begin.
