History has been scripted at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram as South Africa have registered their biggest ever victory in Tests. The Proteas have beaten Bangladesh by an innings and 273 runs to wrap up the series and register their first series win in Asia in 10 years. South Africa’s last series win in the continent came back in 2014, when they beat Sri Lanka 1-0.
Previously, South Africa’s biggest innings win in Tests was their innings and 254-run victory over Bangladesh in Bloemfontein in 2017. They obliterated the record thanks to a stellar showing from their bowlers, who bowled out the Tigers for 159 & 143 respectively to seal the mammoth win.
Chaos unfolded at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Day 3 as Bangladesh lost as many as 16 wickets. They began the day on 38/4 in the first innings, but got reduced to 48/8 thanks to a sizzling five-wicket haul from Kagiso Rabada. Mominul Haque (82) then showed some fight but the Tigers still ended up getting bowled out for 159.
After being asked to bat again, it was the spinners who did the damage in the second innings as Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy, between them, picked a whopping nine wickets.
Maharaj dismissed Nahid Rana to pick a five-fer and seal the win for the Proteas.
With the win, South Africa have now moved to fourth on the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Their PCT is now 54.16% and they are breathing down the neck of third-placed Sri Lanka (55.56%).
