Shubman Gill got off to a couple of good starts in the second Test against Australia in Adelaide, but failed to turn that into something big. In fact, he averages under 30 when he plays outside India, especially outside the subcontinent, and has been criticised for not scoring when the team requires.
Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting further elaborated on the same. "I love watching him play. When he’s in form, he looks as good as anyone in world cricket. But the numbers don’t really stack up, do they, away from home?" Ponting said on the ICC Review.
Ponting also feels that is because he keeps tweaking his technique a lot and needs to trust his instincts more.
"Rather than making wholesale changes, he needs to trust his instincts more," Ponting said.
"He changed things up too much. Against Scott Boland, he moved across to the off stump, presented his front pad, and Boland got him out with a full straight one."
After a failure in the Brisbane Test, Gill will hope to make amends in the fourth Test in Melbourne, which gets underway on December 26 (Thursday).
