Shabnam Shakil added to all three squads of the India-South Africa series

The 17-year-old right-arm pacer was recently also a part of the Board President’s XI game against South Africa

Young and quick Shabnam Shakil has been added to all three squads of the ongoing South Africa Women's Tour of India 2024.

The girl from Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, turned 17 just three days ago. She was part of India’s inaugural Under-19 Women’s World Cup-winning team and is currently a member of the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

In this WPL season, she picked up the wickets of modern women’s cricket greats like Alyssa Healy, Chamari Athapaththu and Nat Sciver.

Looking at her potential, the women’s cricket selection committee also included her in the Board President XI’s side. However, the game was abandoned due to rain. Now, considering that the Indian women have already won the series 2-0, coach Amol Muzumdar and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur might want to give her a go in the third ODI on June 23.

She would be the second pacer from the U19 World Cup-winning cohort to make the Indian side after Titas Sadhu.

Michael Klinger, who has coached her at the Gujarat Giants in the 2024 season, was all praise for her after her game against UP Warriorz, where she finished with figures of 3 for 11.

"She's a great, young kid. She has come from the Under-19s team and she's always working on her game. To me, that work ethic is the most important and she deserves the result she got tonight and last game as well...Her maturity is beyond her years, and she has got the work ethic. She's only going to get stronger and fitter over time. So, that's going to help.

Whether she did well in the last couple of games or not, I don't mind because when The girls work as hard as they do and someone like Shabnam, you want to give them opportunities," Klinger said at the post-match press conference.
