One month after being bought for his base price of 30 lakh by Punjab Kings at the IPL 2025 mega auction, Suryansh Shedge produced one of the extraordinary seasons in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) history to power Mumbai to their second title in the 20-over tournament.
Shedge entered the final against Madhya Pradesh having hit 6* off 1, 36* off 12 and 30* off 8 in his previous three games. He kept that run going, hammering 36* off 15 balls to ensure Mumbai lifted the title.
Chasing 175, Mumbai needed 46 off 5.2 overs with five wickets in hand when Shedge walked in. The 21-year-old smoked three sixes and as many fours to take the Shreyas Iyer-led side over the line with 13 balls to spare. He was named the Player of the Match for his efforts.
Highest strike rate in the knockout stages of a SMAT season (QF, SF, F) (3 inns batted)
278.57 - Suryansh Shedge (Mumbai, 2024/25)
202.32 - Sumeet Verma (Himachal Pradesh, 2022/23)
201.14 - Rajat Patidar (Madhya Pradesh, 2024/25)
The chase was set up by Ajinkya Rahane (37 off 30) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 35). The two veterans provided the platform for Shedge and Atharva Ankolekar (16* off 6) to get the job done.
Earlier, Mumbai restricted Madhya Pradesh to 174/8. It was largely a struggle for MP, but a stellar record-equalling effort from skipper Rajat Patidar (81*) helped them get to a fighting total. Ultimately, though, it did not prove enough.
With the victory, Mumbai have joined Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Baroda as teams to win multiple SMAT titles. Mumbai also won the competition in 2022/23, triumphing over Himachal Pradesh in the final.
This victory also caps off a special captaincy year for Shreyas Iyer, who won both the IPL and SMAT as captain in the space of seven months.
