A potential debut could be on the cards for 20-year-old Ryana MacDonald-Gay as England women have added the medium pacer to the ODI squad to face New Zealand due to concerns over the fitness of multiple players.
MacDonald-Gay, who plays for South East Stars, is in the midst of a fine domestic season, having picked 12 wickets at an average of 11.75 in the 2024 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, the country’s premier 50-over domestic competition.
On the eve of the first ODI against New Zealand, head coach Jon Lewis confirmed that the exciting youngster has been called-up as cover, with several squad members carrying niggles.
"Ryana has been a standout bowler in domestic 50-over cricket and had a good 50-over tour of New Zealand with our England A team," Lewis said, reported ESPNcricinfo.
"We have brought her in at this point as we have a couple of niggles in the squad. We have been really impressed with her skill level and accuracy.
"She is an exciting young talent and we look forward to having her in the squad."
MacDonald-Gay turned 20 only earlier this year, but has already made 14 appearances in the Women’s hundred, with all of the appearances coming for the Oval Invincibles. For the Invincibles, she’s taken 13 wickets at an economy of 7.80. She enjoyed a very good 2023 Hundred season, with her picking eight wickets at an economy of 6.90.
The first ODI between England Women and New Zealand Women will be played at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, on June 26 (Wednesday).
