Bangladesh continue to remain the only opponent Rohit Sharma is yet to conquer in Tests as the team India skipper endured yet another failure against the Tigers in red-ball cricket.
Heading into the first Test today in Chennai, Rohit had averaged 11.00 against Bangladesh in Tests, with his scores against the Tigers reading 6, 6 & 21. Bangladesh were the only side against whom Rohit had not posted a fifty-plus score in Tests.
The unwanted record continued on Day 1 of the Chennai Test as the team India Test captain perished for a 19-ball 6, caught at slip by the bowling of young Hasan Mahmud.
On the day, it was a struggle out in the middle for the 37-year-old. He took 11 balls to get off the mark and then was saved by an umpire’s call on his 13th ball. Mahmud got him trapped with an in-nipper but the on-field decision of ‘not out’ saved Rohit.
However, Rohit could not make his luck count as he departed six balls later, this time falling to an outswinger. Rohit now averages 9.75 in Test cricket against Bangladesh. They are the only opponents against whom he averages less than 30.
This is also the first time Rohit has been dismissed for single digits in the first innings of a home Test (first innings of the Test).
