Rohit Sharma follows Kohli as he announces T20I retirement

Rohit ended his glorious T20I career with his second T20 World Cup title

On June 29 (Saturday), Rohit Sharma followed Virat Kohli's footsteps to announce his retirement from T20 Internationals (T20I). Rohit finishes as the leading run-getter in the format, with 4,231 runs at 32.05 to go with a strike rate of 140.89. He also holds the record for hitting the most centuries (5) in T20Is.

In just his second tournament as a leader, the 37-year-old took the Men in Blue unbeaten to a second T20 World Cup title.

It was India’s first-ever T20 World Cup title after 2007 and their first ICC event after 11 years. Rohit’s 2024 campaign was his best-ever campaign in an Indian shirt, with 257 runs in the competition, averaging 36.71 while striking at 156.70.

"This was my last [T20I] game as well," Rohit said at the press conference after the final. "No better time to say goodbye to this format. I've loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup.

"I wanted this badly. Very hard to put in words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line."

“Overall, as a team, as a group on the field, we wanted this really bad. We wanted to win this. To win a tournament like this, a lot goes behind the scenes, a lot of effort, a lot of minds need to come together. I am very proud of this bunch of boys I have and the management as well for giving us that liberty to go and play to execute, for having that trust in each one of us,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.
