Rohit Sharma becomes third player to score 1000 T20 World Cup runs

However, just after bringing up 1000 T20 World Cup runs, Rohit Sharma retired after Josh Little’s delivery hit him in the bicep region

Rohit Sharma’s legacy in the T20 World Cup goes a long way, starting with his dazzling half-century against South Africa in the last game of the Super 8s back in 2007. Since then, Rohit has continued to raise the bar for all batters, tournament after tournament.

All he needed prior to the clash against Ireland was 37 runs to bring up 1000 T20 World Cup runs. Chasing a paltry score of 97 gave Rohit the perfect opportunity to bring up the milestone. After Virat Kohli’s early dismissal, for his lowest score in a T20 World Cup, Rohit saw through the Irish storm and played a stellar hand.

Rohit brought up his 1000th T20 World Cup run with a six off Joshua Little's bowling. He became only the third player in the competition's history to score 1000 runs, with Mahela Jayawardene (1016) and Virat Kohli (1142) the only two other batters to notch up over 1000 runs. Incidentally, the big hit to bring up the milestone was also Rohit’s 600th six in international cricket.

Rohit getting to the feat is no surprise, considering that the Indian skipper is the only player apart from Shakib Al Hasan to play in every edition of the T20 World Cup. The fifty against Ireland today was Rohit's 10th in T20WCs. Only Kohli (14) now has more 50+ scores in the competition.

Just after bringing up his half-century, however, Rohit retired hurt and walked back to the dressing room after Joshua Little’s delivery sprung up to hurt his bicep.
