Ranji Trophy: In at No. 3, Washington Sundar slams 2nd first-class ton

The southpaw last scored a century against Tripura in 2017, opening the batting for Tamil Nadu

Washington Sundar has slammed his second first-class century in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Sundar came in at No.3 after the dismissal of of Narayan Jagadeesan, who had put up 168 for the first wicket with Sai Sudharsan, who went on to score his maiden double hundred in first-class cricket.

Sundar and Sudharsan put on over 230 for the second wicket as Tamil Nadu breached over 400 with as many as nine wickets in hand. Sundar's first hundred at this level came against Tripura in 2017 when he opened the innings with Abhinav Mukund. He scored 159 off 231 deliveries and added 162 for the opening wicket.

Sundar, who has played four Tests for India, missed the first round of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 as he was away on international duty. Even at the international level, the southpaw has shown great potential with the bat, having hit three fifties in six innings in Test cricket at an average of 66.25. However, with Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel offering similar skills, the 25-year-old's chances have been limited.

At the Ranji Trophy, Sundar averages close to 30 and has slammed over 650 runs for Tamil Nadu in 24 innings so far. He has two centuries and as many fifties to his name.
