Prithvi Shaw didn’t really have the best outing in the Duleep Trophy last month, but after finding a county stint with Northamptonshire, he decided to go all guns blazing. In the Royal London One-day Cup, he blew Somerset to smithereens on his way to 244 from 153 balls, en route which he broke multiple records.
His 244 is the second-best individual score by a batter in List-A cricket in England and is the fourth-highest score by an Indian in List-A cricket. While he was understandably excited by the record, the Mumbaikar stated that the India selection was far from his mind, and he was just enjoying the process of scoring runs.
“Definitely (here for the) experience for sure. Not really thinking what the Indian selectors may be thinking, but I just want to have a good time here. Northamptonshire have given me this opportunity… they’re really looking after me. I’m really enjoying it,” Shaw said after the game.
“The sun was out, it was kind of like Indian weather today (Wednesday), so it was really looking good. I wasn’t thinking about anything. You know when an inside edge doesn’t get me out, that means this day is for me. You have to be lucky sometimes, so I think this was a day for me. I didn’t look back after that. When I got 150, I thought I was timing the ball really well, and this could be the day to go bigger,” he said.
In List-A cricket, Shaw became the fourth batter to hit multiple double-hundreds. His first one came against Puducherry (227*) in 2021 and he admitted that it was in his mind and he wanted to better it.
“The 227 was in my head, to be honest. I spoke to Whitey (Sam Whiteman) when he was there, and I told him it’s 227, my highest score,” Shaw said.
