No decision taken yet on Babar Azam's captaincy future: PCB Chairman

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the board hasn’t yet taken any decision related to Babar Azam’s captaincy future

On Thursday (July 4), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the board hasn’t yet taken a decision on the future of Babar Azam’s captaincy. Pakistan were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the group stage despite being in a group with the United States of America, Canada, and Ireland.

It was the first time in Pakistan's T20 World Cup history that they were eliminated in the first round. Such a terrible result does indeed warrant a thorough post-mortem. PCB’s Chairman Naqvi attributed that post-mortem to head coach Gary Kirsten’s report on the team’s performance at the global event.

“I have asked them (Kirsten and Mahmood) to come here as I want to talk to them in person and in detail based on Kirsten’s report on the World Cup,” Naqvi told as reported by PTI.

“Kirsten has given a very detailed report on the team and it will help us a lot to chalk out our future course of action,” he added.

Babar’s captaincy was equally poor throughout the tournament, with the right-hander’s slow and meticulous approach costing his side in the group stage.

“No decision taken so far related to Babar Azam. One former player has submitted a very comprehensive report on what needs to be done to improve cricket. But I will take no decisions out of anger or based on what is being said on social media. Decisions taken out of haste and anger generally lead to more complications and I don’t want that in our cricket,” he added.

Naqvi was in agreement that the national team need to do 'a lot' to improve their state. However, he doesn’t want to jump to a hasty conclusion yet.

“I have been in the board for four months and I am looking at everything and believe me there is a lot to be done to improve things within the PCB besides the team. But I don’t want to jump to conclusions and make hasty decisions.”
