Amidst cries in Pakistan for a captaincy reset in both white-ball and red-ball cricket, former wicketkeeper batter Kamran Akmal has backed the incumbents and has asserted that what Pakistan need right now is vision and continuity.
Because 2-0 whitewash at home at the hands of Bangladesh, there have been calls for the Men in Green to remove Shan Masood from Test captaincy.
Meanwhile, there are reports claiming that Babar Azam getting removed from white-ball captaincy is inevitable, with Mohammad Rizwan the favourite to take over.
But Akmal believes that changing captains won’t magically turn around the team’s fortunes as the new captain will ultimately have to deal with the same players.
"Is it because the captain is not their favourite and they want one of their choice? Do you think the new captain will bring Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith or Mitchell Starc in the team to boost its performance?,” Akmal said, speaking on Geo News.
"Everyone including the captain, coach and selectors should set their direction right and reform their thinking," he added.
Akmal further opined that, when it comes to white-ball cricket, changing a captain now would be bizarre due to its timing, less than five months before the Champions Trophy.
"Why they wanted to bring a change now, if they did not do that after losing the Asia Cup, ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup?," he questioned.
"If they do not get their basics right then such blunders will continue to happen and replacing captains will make no difference.”
Babar and Masood are both playing for the Stallions in the ongoing Champions Cup. Earlier today, Babar hit 76 batting at No.3.
