Shanto to step down as Bangladesh captain after SA series: Report

The left-handed batter has already informed the board about his decision

Najmul Hossain Shanto is likely to step down as Bangladesh captain after the two-match Test series against South Africa, Cricbuzz reported on October 26 (Saturday).

The left-handed batter was appointed Bangladesh’s all-format skipper for 12 months in February and was expected to lead till next year’s Champions Trophy, but Shanto has already informed the board about his decision.

"Yes, he informed us that he is not ready to lead the side after the South Africa series," a top BCB official confirmed the development to Cricbuzz.

Meanwhile, Shanto added: "Let's see what happens (as far as leading Bangladesh is concerned) because I am still waiting to hear it from the president (BCB).”

South Africa won the first Test by seven wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the series, with Shanto registering scores of 7 and 23.

Overall, Shanto has led Bangladesh in nine Tests, as many ODIs and 24 T20Is, winning 3, 3 and 10 respectively.
