Mushfiqur Rahim will miss Bangladesh’s last match of the 2023 Asia Cup against India on Friday (September 15) to be with his family. The 36-year-old had left for Dhaka for the birth of his second child after Bangladesh’s game against Sri Lanka on September 9, but was expected to return for the India game.
“Mushfiqur has informed us that his wife is still recovering (after giving birth), and he needs to be by her side and with their children at this time. We fully understand his situation and have decided to permit him to skip the game,” BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said in a statement.
Bangladesh are already out of the tournament and their game against India is a dead rubber. They lost both their games of the Super Fours but would have mathematically been alive if Sri Lanka had defeated India on Tuesday, but it didn’t happen.
Bangladesh have won just one game out of four in the ongoing Asia Cup, but Mushfiqur had a decent tournament. The wicketkeeper-batter managed scores of 13, 25, 64 and 29 in four innings and is currently Bangladesh’s third-highest run-scorer in the competition.
India are already through and will play the winner of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka clash in the final on Sunday.
