MS Dhoni has done his work; what more do you want from him? Asks Kapil Dev

Tipped to be his final season in the IPL, the CSK skipper has led his side to four IPL titles

There are high chances that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 final could be MS Dhoni's last game in the tournament for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Over the last three seasons, fans have thronged the stadium to get a glimpse of their favourite player given that it may very well be his final season.

While there has been no official confirmation from CSK or Dhoni over his future, former India captain Kapil Dev feels it's time to enjoy Dhoni's 15-year IPL career and not talk about his retirement.

“He has been playing IPL for 15 years. Why is it that we are only talking about Dhoni? He has done his work. What more do we want from him? Do we want him to play all his life? That is not going to happen," Kapil said on ABP News.

"We should instead be thankful that he played for 15 years. Whether he plays next year or not, before departing he has played impressively. He may not have scored big runs but he led the team to the final and it shows what is the importance of a skipper in the game of cricket," he added.

In his 11 innings in IPL 2023 so far, Dhoni has hit 104 runs at a strike-rate of 185.71. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had confirmed earlier in the tournament that Dhoni is playing despite a dodgy knee, that has seen him bat way lower than his usual batting position. However, that has not stopped Chennai from making their 10th IPL final.

The IPL 2023 final between CSK and Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) had to be pushed to the reserve day due to persistent rains. As a result, the finale will be played on Monday (May 29) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, where CSK will have a chance to win their fifth title and go level with Mumbai Indians (MI). However, it will not be easy as an in-form GT will look to make it two in a row.
