Former South Africa bowler Morne Morkel has officially joined India's senior men’s team as the bowling coach, according to a report on Cricbuzz. The appointment, which was scheduled for the team’s Sri Lanka tour, was delayed as Morkel was visiting his ill father in Pretoria, South Africa.
Morkel, who played 86 Tests and 117 ODIs for South Africa between 2006 and 2018, is currently living in Australia with his family and has previously worked with the Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir, as a player with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and as a member of his support staff with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
The 39-year-old started working with the New Zealand Women’s team support staff in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2022. Soon after, Morkel joined the Namibian men’s team support staff. Before joining the Indian team, Pakistan was the last international side that Morkel coached before resigning from the position in December 2023.
After losing the ODI series against Sri Lanka 0-2, India will be next up against Bangladesh for a two-match Test series, starting September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
