Who have grabbed the headlines?

Ton from Rickleton

Ryan Rickleton of the Seattle Orcas smashed a brilliant century (103 off 66 balls) as his team chased down 169 with nine wickets in hand against the LA Knight Riders. This was an important knock for Rickleton and his team after they were hammered by MI New York in the tournament opener.

Smith goes berserk

Steve Smith, who is not favoured in the shortest format by the franchises as well as the national team, showed glimpses of what he is capable of with the bat in T20s. Anrich Nortje, who had an outstanding 2024 T20WC, was taken to the cleaners by Smith, who hit 22 runs in one over off the Proteas bowler playing for MI New York. This shifted the game in Washington Freedom’s favour, who won through the DLS method.

Faf’s efforts wasted

While Smith managed to eke out a win in the rain-affected game, Faf du Plessis of the Texas Super Kings was not lucky enough. Despite hitting a century off 58 balls, TSK's match against Washington Freedom was abandoned, with both teams sharing the points.

Unmukt Chand’s statement fifty

For the former Indian U-19 World Cup-winning Cup-winning captain Unmukt Chand, who could not get selected in the USA squad for the T20 World Cup, MLC presented an opportunity to make a statement. And he did just that, scoring 68 off 45 balls as the LA Knight Riders beat TSK. This was Chand’s first fifty-plus score in MLC after two seasons.

Ali Khan’s triple wicket over

In the same game where Unmukt Chand scored the fifty, LAKR were in a losing position, with the opposition TSK at 100/2 in 13 overs and needing only 63 off the last seven, with Devon Conway batting brilliantly. But Khan had other plans as he took three wickets in one over, including that of Conway, and brought the Knight Riders back in the game. In the end, he finished with figures of 4/33.

Pooran sets the stage alight

Nicholas Pooran set MLC 2024 alight by smashing an unbeaten 62 off just 37 balls in his first game as the MI New York chased down 109 in just 14.2 overs against Seattle Orcas. In the next game, the West Indian hit 44 off 30 against the Washington Freedom, but MINY ended up losing the match.

The duds (so far) from MLC 2024

Marco Jansen

Playing for the Washington Freedom, the Proteas bowler has turned out to be a liability, going at 11.25 runs per over across his two four-over spells. With only two wickets to his name and an average of 45, Jansen has not got going at all with the ball.

Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib, who was supposed to play a pivotal role with both bat and ball, has managed to score 60 runs in three matches. He has averaged 20 with the bat, striking at 130.0. To make things worse, he has taken only one wicket with the ball, averaging 82. His economy rate of 11.71 is further proof of just how bad he's been.

Tim David

The Australian, who has been going through a bad phase ever since the T20 World Cup, has continued to struggle. He has scores of 9 (12) and 12 (15) in the first two matches of this season.
