Michael Vaughan blasts ECB over scheduling of The Hundred

The former England captain is unhappy that the tournament ran in tandem with the Paris Olympics

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has hit out at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the scheduling of The Hundred. Vaughan is upset that the tournament, which is struggling to garner eyeballs as it is, was scheduled in such a way that it clashed with the 2024 Paris Olympics.

While every country scheduled their fixtures around the Olympics, the ECB decided against it. Incidentally, cricket is set to be part of the next Olympics in Los Angeles.

The Olympics began on July 24 and continued until August 12. Meanwhile, The Hundred — both men's and women's editions — commenced on July 23 and concluded on August 18.

“I'll be honest about this year's Hundred. I think the England & Wales Cricket Board [ECB] screwed up. I think they put it up against the Olympics. I just think that the scheduling of this year's Hundred was poor. When you think you are trying to sell it for a lot of money. I think the ECB have got to make it a very, very kind of brutal call. I don't think there should be bilateral one-day series anymore,” Vaughan was quoted as saying by The Telegraph Cricket.

In the final of the Women's Hundred, London Spirits pipped Welsh Fire by four wickets, while in the men's competition, Oval Invincibles edged out Southern Brave by 17 runs — both at Lord's.

The inaugural edition of the tournament was played in 2021.
