MCA to felicitate Mumbai at Wankhede following Irani Cup triumph

The Ajinkya Rahane-led side brought home the title for the first time in 27 years

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) have announced that they will felicitate the triumphant Mumbai squad following their Irani Cup triumph on October 5 (Saturday) in Lucknow. They won the Irani Cup for the first time in 27 years, pipping Rest of India (RoI) via first innings lead. The ceremony will be held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

MCA president Ajinkya Naik said that he is proud of the 'Khadoos' spirit Mumbai showed in the Irani Cup, which has made them the most successful team in the Indian domestic circuit over the years.

"Once again, Mumbai demonstrated an outstanding example of grit and determination. The boys upheld the tradition of playing ‘Khadoos’ cricket, excelling throughout the five days. It was a perfect display of teamwork, with each player fulfilling their role brilliantly. After last year’s Ranji Trophy victory, this Irani Cup triumph adds another feather to our cap,” Naik said.

Mumbai slammed 537 in the first innings thanks to an unbeaten 222 from Sarfaraz Khan. RoI conceded a 121-run deficit, and in the second innings, they were in the game when they had Mumbai at 125/6. But Tanush Kotian slammed a superb century and put on an unbeaten 158-run stand with Mohit Avasthi (51*).

Mumbai played in the Irani Cup as they had won the Ranji Trophy final - beating Vidarbha by 169 runs in Mumbai. They are the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history, having won the title 42 times.
