Matthew Mott, who was appointed England’s white-ball head coach in 2022, has resigned ahead of the white-ball series against Australia. The 50-year-old led England to a title in his first-ever ICC event back in 2022 when the Three Lions won the T20 World Cup, but they remained winless in major tournaments ever after.
Not only did England endure a tumultuous ODI World Cup defence in 2023, but they also put on a horrific show in the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup before making a back-door entry to the semi-final. Eventually, India thumped them in the semi-final, sending them out of the competition.

Assistant Coach Marcus Trescothick has been appointed on an interim basis.
Earlier this month, England’s managing director, Rob Key, insisted that the English team needed a ‘new direction’, and Mott’s resignation comes in the aftermath of that meeting. However, Jos Buttler keeps his spot as England’s white-ball captain despite enduring a similar fate in world events.
“After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I now feel the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead,” said Key. “This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team's future success.
“With our focus shifting towards the Champions Trophy early next year and the next cycle of white-ball competition, it is crucial that we ensure the team is focused and prepared.”
Mott leaves with a poor record in ODIs, with 18 losses and 16 wins. However, he had a much better success rate in the T20 format, where the Three Lions won 23 times under his tutelage with 19 defeats.
While Marcus Trescothick will take over as the head coach for the Australia series, the ECB are yet to name a full-time replacement for Mott.
