Mashrafe Mortaza's house set on fire amid violence in Bangladesh

The former Bangladesh skipper, who is part of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party, was elected as an MP earlier this year

In the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, former skipper Mashrafe Mortaza's house was burnt down by protesters on Monday (August 5). Mortaza was elected MP from Narail-2 constituency earlier this year in Khulna Division from the Awami League, a party led by Sheikh Hasina. He joined the party in 2018 but played his last international match for Bangladesh in 2020.

The vandalism of his house comes after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post and fled the country following nationwide protests to do away with the quota system that reserves over 30% of the government jobs to the kin of freedom fighters.

The impact of the violence is such that the ICC is keeping a close eye on the situation and could also move the Women's T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in Bangladesh in October, out of the country, with India, Sri Lanka and the Middle East being some prime options.

One of Bangladesh's finest, Mortaza has played over 300 matches for Bangladesh across formats, leading in 117 of them, since making his debut in 2001. He burst onto the scene as someone who bowled really quick but had to cut down on the speed due to injuries in the following years. However, he still continued to have an impact, with 390 wickets and hitting close to 3,000 runs across formats.
