Senior Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah is set to retire from T20 Internationals (T20I) after the conclusion of the ongoing series against India, according to reports. The 38-year-old has played 139 T20Is since making his debut in 2007, amassing nearly 2,400 runs at a strike rate of 117.74. He has also chipped in with 40 wickets with the ball.
"It's not a break, he wants to bring an end to the T20I chapter. He is supposed to announce it in this series," a BCB official told The Daily Star.
Like Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah was expected to announce his retirement after the T20 World Cup 2024. However, he was then named in the T20I squad for the series against India.
Ahead of the series, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto had hinted at Mahmudullah speaking to the selectors over his future. "Regarding Riyad [Mahmudullah] bhai, from what I understand, this series is very important for him, He might have discussions with the selectors. I am not entirely clear on this, but I believe there will definitely be discussions with the selectors and the board [regarding his future]," Shanto had said ahead of the first T20I.
In the first T20I against India in Gwalior, Mahmudullah just managed one run as Bangladesh went down by seven wickets. The next T20I will be played in Delhi on October 9 (Wednesday), before reaching its conclusion on October 12 (Saturday) in Hyderabad, which could also be Mahmudullah's final match in the format.
He retired from Tests in 2021 but continues to feature for his nation in One-Day Internationals (ODI).
