Controversies that surrounded the Maharaja T20 league this week
On August 20 (Tuesday), plenty of drama unfurled in the Maharaja T20 trophy when Gulbarga Mystics’ Vyshak Vijaykumar went down before he could release the ball during his action.
What’s so funny or dramatic about it, you may ask? Read it all here!!
Headline grabbers thus far
Karun Nair (Mysore Warriors)
Over the last two years, Karun Nair’s white-ball career has taken a sharp upward curve with stellar Maharaja T20 campaigns. The 32-year-old has picked up from where he left last year (where he was the highest run-scorer), with 222 runs in four games, averaging 74. But here’s the biggest thing about why everyone is talking about him: his strike rate of 201.82 is the best amongst the top 15 run-scorers. Against the Dragons, he hammered a scarcely believable 124 off 48 balls, bludgeoning 13 sixes. It was his second Maharaja T20 ton in as many seasons.

Abhinav Manohar (Shivamogga Lions)
For the first few days, it was Abhinav Manohar that earned all the plaudits before Karun stole the headlines. The Shivamogga Lions batter has so far smashed 158 runs, striking at 190.36, with 13 of his hits crossing the boundary ropes.
His best knock in the season, too, incidentally came against Mangalore Dragons. In that knock, the right-hander smashed 84 off 34 balls, showing his attacking prowess. While the Lions are languishing at the bottom of the table, you can’t quite point your fingers at the 29-year-old for slacking.
Manoj Bhandage (Mysore Warriors)
There’s a reason why the Warriors are a much-hyped team. If one person doesn’t get you, the other will. Someone who has consistently impacted all games so far is Manoj Bhandage. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder has thus far showed his worth with several impactful innings.
Bhandage has scored 131 runs, out of which 106 have come at the death, where he's struck at 252.4. With the ball as well, he has chipped in with crucial wickets (two), averaging 29.50.

Naveen MG (Bengaluru Blasters)
Three wins out of four, Bengaluru Blasters have been on a roll in this year’s Maharaja T20 trophy. Largely thanks to some sublime bowling from the 30-year-old Gneshwar Naveen. The right-arm bowler has scalped eight wickets in the ongoing edition, averaging a mouth-watering 9.25 with the ball.
Apart from picking up a vital four-wicket haul, he also has an economy of 5.28. Let that sink in.
Vidwath Kaverappa (Hubli Tigers)
While he was slow to start the tournament, Vidwath has picked pace as the tournament has progressed, with six wickets. He is one of the few bowlers to have bowled a maiden in this edition, with his consistent lines and lengths troubling the batters.

He is already a well-established figure in Karnataka, will these performances eventually help him get regular game time at the IPL level?
Who hasn’t clicked yet?
Nihal Ullal (Shivamogga Lions)
At the age of 31, Nihal Ullal isn’t getting any younger. Thus far, his performances have been super disappointing. The Lions’ skipper has been a disaster, with scores of 0, 0, 8 and 4 in his last four appearances.
Even his captaincy has been far away from convincing, putting him in a place of jeopardy. Amongst all the top-order batters in the 2024 Maharaja Trophy, Ullal has the worst average (2.67).
Krishnappa Gowtham (Mysore Warriors)
While the Warriors have found multiple match-winners, they still are yet to see the best of Krishnappa Gowtham in a much-awaited homecoming season. The all-rounder has hardly impressed this season, scoring 31 runs and picking up just the solitary wicket in the tournament.
Aside from his average of 102.00, his economy of 10.20 is also quite worrying.
Vasuki Koushik (Shivamogga Lions)
See a pattern? There’s a reason why the Lions haven’t roared yet.
That’s because most of their main names have failed to impress thus far. Vasuki Koushik is perhaps one of the best new ball bowlers in the state, but not in this tournament, where he has only struck once, averaging 78.
For someone as prolific as him, the tournament till now has been nothing short of a disappointment.
