Heading into the clash between the Bengaluru Blasters and Hubli Tigers on August 23 (Friday), there had not been a single super over played in the history of the Maharaja Trophy.
But chaos unfolded at the Chinnaswamy today as THREE super overs were played in the same contest, making it the first instance in history of a T20 game witnessing three super overs. It was defending champions Hubli who finally emerged winners after chasing down 13 in the third super over of the contest.
A remarkable coincidence was that this was the second consecutive tied game at the Chinnaswamy overseeing multiple super overs after India and Afghanistan played a double super over in the third T20I of their three-match series on January 17 earlier this year.
After Hubli Tigers batted first and posted 164, Bengaluru botched the chase to ensure that the game went to a super over. The Blasters needed 2 to win off 5 balls with three wickets in hand, but a sequence of W 0 0 1 W meant that the match ended in a tie. LR Kumar bowled the final over for the Tigers, conceding just five.
Bengaluru then batted first in the super over and managed to get 10 runs. They only had one run off the first four balls, but Aniruddha Joshi smoked a six on the last ball (after a wide and a two) to take the Blasters to double digits.
Left-arm seamer Lavish Kaushal, who took a five-wicket haul in the first innings, had the task of defending 11 and he, too, conceded exactly 10. Chaos unfolded in the final ball of the first super over.Â
With Hubli needing two off the final ball, their skipper, Manish Pandey, chipped one straight up in the air. Lavish had the chance to gobble up the catch and take Bengaluru home but spilt a tough chance. However, he threw the ball quickly to the keeper’s end, meaning the Tigers were only able to collect a single.
In the second super over, the Hubli Tigers batted first and managed only eight. Bengaluru’s right-arm seamer Gnaneshwer Naveen bowled a fantastic six balls, not conceding a single boundary. Pandey collected a hat-trick of twos to take Hubli’s score to 8/0 in the second super over.
Astonishingly, scores were tied yet again as Vidwath Kaverappa, who bowled the second super over for the Tigers, conceded only eight - despite leaking a boundary off the first ball - to force a THIRD super over.
Here we go again

In the third super over, Bengaluru Blasters managed 12. Joshi departed on the very first ball, but Suraj Ahuja and Shubhang Hegde collected 12 off the final five balls bowled by Manvanth Kumar.Â
Manvanth might have erred with the ball, but with Hubli needing 4 off 1 ball in the third super over, the left-hander turned into a hero for The Tigers as he smashed a full-toss through vacant square leg to help Hubli win arguably the most thrilling T20 match in history.
