What is Lanka Premier League?

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is a franchise T20 competition hosted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The first season was held in 2020, and 2024 marks its fifth edition. Former Australia captain Michael Clarke is the brand ambassador this year. 

How many teams are there in LPL 2024?

As many as five teams will take part in LPL 2024. They are Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Sixers, Galle Marvels, Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons. 

What is the schedule?

LPL 2024 will begin on July 1, and the final will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, on July 21. Qualifier 1 and Eliminator will be played on July 18, while Qualifier 2 will take place on July 20. You can check out the entire schedule here.

What are the venues?

Three venues will host 24 T20 games: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele (July 1-3), Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla (July 5-10), and R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo (July 13-21).

What is the structure of the tournament?

The top four teams advance to the playoffs. Qualifier 1 will be 1 vs 2, and the winner will advance to the final. The losing team will play the winner of the Eliminator in Qualifier 2. The winner of Qualifier 2 will face the winner of Qualifier 1 in the final.

Who are the defending champions and the most successful team in the league?

B-Love Kandy won the 2023 edition in Colombo, beating Dambulla Aura in the final. Jaffna Kings are the most successful team in the tournament, winning it thrice. Galle Gladiators have finished runners-up twice, while Colombo Stars ended the 2022 season as finalists.

Where can I watch these matches?

All matches will be streamed on Fancode, while Star Sports Network will telecast them. There will be as many as eight double-headers. The day matches will begin at 3 PM IST, while the night games will take place from 7.30 PM IST onwards.

What are some of the controversies?

Dambulla Aura, which was purchased by Imperial Sports Group, was terminated after its co-owner, Tamim Rahim, was arrested for match-fixing. After that, Sequoia Consultants, through DeSilva Holdings, now owns the franchise and has renamed it Dambulla Sixers. Also, B-Love Kandy was terminated for violating contractual obligations and replaced by Kandy Falcons.

Colombo Strikers - Captain: Thisara Perera, Head coach: Carl Crowe

Dambulla Sixers - Captain: Mohammad Nabi, Head coach: Rangana Herath

Galle Marvels -  Captain: Niroshan Dickwella, Head coach: Graham Ford

Jaffna Kings - Captain: Charith Asalanka, Head coach: Avishka Gunawardene

Kandy Falcons - Captain: Wanindu Hasaranga, Head coach: Mushtaq Ahmed

Who are some of the expensive players in LPL 2024?

Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana was the most expensive player. He was picked by Colombo Strikers for USD 120,000. In what turned out to be a surprise, Afghanistan's Karim Janat was bought by Dambulla for USD 80,000, while Jaffna secured the services of the South African batter Rilee Rossouw for USD 60,000.

Any news rules introduced?

As a matter of fact, yes. Overs 16th and 17th of an innings will be termed as power-blast overs, where only four fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle. This is an addition to the powerplay rules, where only two fielders are allowed outside the circle in the first six overs.
