Loyalty The Biggest Reason For CSK's Success In IPL: Sam Curran
Curran played 15 matches for CSK across IPL 2020 and IPL 2021, and was part of the side that won the IPL title in 2021
With five IPL titles, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), alongside Mumbai Indians (MI), are the joint-most successful franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). And according to Sam Curran, it’s pretty simply why the franchise is as successful as they are: because of the loyalty they show, not just to the players but to every single staff employed at the club.
In a chat with former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton on the Sky Cricket Podcast ahead of IPL 2025, Curran spoke about CSK’s loyalty and gave an example of how they still have coaches and support staff who have been around since the inaugural edition in 2008.
“Chennai and Mumbai have won five trophies [each], and I think that's probably linked to their loyalty,” Curran said on the Sky Cricket Podcast.
“The other day in training, I was talking to the coaches and some of them said they’ve been around since 2008.
“When I got picked up in the auction, I had about 12, 14 WhatsApp messages from all the people that were here in 2020, and I think it's those small things that make you appreciate [being here].
“Sometimes franchise cricket can be a little bit, ‘Oh, you turn up and I guess you play the tournament and you go on to the next one’, but I think Chennai, they've shown why they're the most successful franchise.”
Curran played 15 matches for CSK across IPL 2020 and IPL 2021, and was part of the side that won the IPL title in 2021. At the IPL 2025 mega auction, he was purchased by CSK for INR 2.4 crore.
