Love of the game greater than equalling Muralitharan’s record: Ashwin

Ashwin equalled Sri Lankan legend Muralitharan for the most Player of the Series awards by a player in Test cricket

Ravichandran Ashwin, who was awarded the Player of the Series award in the 2-0 win for the Indian team against Bangladesh, said that he is not motivated by awards and records anymore, he rather is moved by the love of the game.

Ashwin, who equalled Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan’s record for most Player of the Series awards by a cricketer in Tests, was asked during the post-match press conference about how he felt about reaching the milestone and if he would be able to break the record or not.

In reply, Ashwin said, with a sly smile on his face, “These are questions for the future, so I do not have an answer for that right now.”

“I would like to do [answer] it on a special occasion. Probably, if I end up with that, it’s great. But these are things that do not motivate me anymore. For me, it is the love of the game, and I have harped about it again and again, “ added the 38-year-old, who collected his 11th Player of the Series award on October 1 (Tuesday).

Describing the reason he likes playing the game, Ashwin, who hit 114 runs, including a century at his home ground in Chennai and took 11 wickets, the joint-most in the series, along with Jasprit Bumrah, said, “I do whatever that I do on the field to enjoy it and not for someone reason or to think that somebody would applaud about it. That’s not why I picked up the bat and ball in the first place.”

“I am glad that I got here. I would like to retain that happiness and happy, peaceful sanctum. Winning the matches and creating memories with everyone in the dressing room is more important for me, “ added the Chennai-born, where he also quoted former India coach Rahul Dravid, who had said that the best of his career as both India player and coach was not winning matches, but creating memories.
