PAKISTAN WIN BY FOUR WICKETS!

Shafique aptly score the winning runs as he cuts Jayasuriya through point and runs two to bring up a magnificent win. The 22-year old remains not out on 158 and what a knock it has been.

Its a monumental run chase from Pakistan and its the highest ever chase at Galle, decimating the 268 chased by Sri Lanka seven years ago. Its also Pakistan's second highest chase in Pakistan's Test history. First it was the 87-run opening stand between Shafique and Imam-Ul-Haq and then a 102-run partnership between Babar Azam (55) and Shafique. Mohammad Rizwan contributed 40 more as Sri Lanka struck back with three quick wickets. Kasun Rajitha will kick himself for putting down a sitter to dismiss Shafique when Pakistan needed 19 runs.

One has to feel to Prabath Jayasuriya who has bowled 56.2 tireless overs over the five sessions and finishes with figures of 4-133. He did so much, but in the end its down to Pakistan's composed batting effort that brings up the win. The visitors take a 1-0 in the two-match series.

FOUR AND PAKISTAN CLOSE BY!

Nawaz sweeps Theekshana behind the wicket and the fine leg fielder gives up the chase as the ball runs away to the boundary.

PLAY RESUMES!

Prabath Jayasuriya begins the proceedings as the play resumes at Galle. Nawaz and Shafique run two quick singles. However, there is some extra bounce off the pitch now.

However, the visitors are just 9 runs away from a famous win.

Weather Update

2.15 PM: The rain has eased up but there is water logged on the outfield which is mostly covered. The clouds are clearing a bit and it could be more than half an hour before anything comes up. Stay tuned, we will come up with more updates soon.

RAIN DELAY!

As expected at the beginning of the day, the rain finally comes in to halt the play which was teeming with tension. The ground staff will cover most of the ground and we are not sure how long this delay will be. If Sri Lanka can get two more wickets, then it will be quite the pain for Shaheen Afridi to come out with an injured calf. He had not bowled on the fourth day and had an ice pack strapped to his right calf.

That said, Pakistan can get over the line with two big hits with only 11 to get. Yasir Shah had looked good and Naseem Shah had added 70 with Babar in the first innings. But it is up to Sri Lanka to produce two wickets to give themselves a chance.

Quick singles for Nawaz

Nawaz dabs in the circle and calls for two quick singles to hand the strike back to Shafique. However, the pair are looking relaxed while doing so.

To throw in some drama, the dark clouds have made the visibility dimmer.

RAJITHA DROPS A SITTER!

Its just 19 runs to win, but Sri Lanka had the best chance to get rid of Shafique. The opener stomps forward against De Silva and slogs it high into the sky. Kasun Rajitha at deep midwicket has all the time to position himself and take a comfortable catch, but he lets it spills through. The bowler cannot believe it. What might've become of the game had he taken that!

One good fielding effort followed by a poor one!

Mohammad Nawaz sweeps Jayasuriya to deep square and thinks its a boundary. However, Ramesh Mendis puts in a superb dive to stop it and throws it back to the keeper. Nawaz dives into his crease, kicking up a lot of dust.

In the very next over, Jayasuriya lets the ball runs past him at sweeper and scampers to stop a boundary as the batters runs three.

150 FOR SHAFIQUE!

Abdullah Shafique brings up his 150 with a single on the off side against Jayasuriya. The 22-year old has batted for over six hours and 391 balls for his highest Test score. His innings has held the big chase together and it puts Pakistan in touching distance of a big win.

HASSAN ALI DEPARTS!

Hassan Ali gets a short one from Dhananjaya de Silva as he pulls it to the sweeper boundary to bring up the 300 for his side. However, he mishits with the spin off the next ball to deep midwicket where Maheesh Theekshana takes a good catch. Pakistan's gamble has not paid off and they now have just four wickets and all of them tailenders.

Jayasuriya begins the second session

Pakistan send in Hassan Ali to speed up the scoring. Just 44 to win, a few big hits will help ease few nerves. Jayasuriya goes hunting for a leading edge and beat Hassan to it but doesn't get it. Just a single.

JAYASURIYA GETS HIS FOURTH, LUNCH TAKEN!

Jayasuriya comes round the wicket and pitches the ball on the leg stump to Salman Agha who strides forward. The ball kicks up dust and goes across his off stump, taking a feather edge. The umpire waits for a moment before lifting his finger. Agha reviews it but Ultra-Edge shows a clear spike when the ball went past his bat.

That will be lunch and Pakistan stand 44 runs away from a big win. Though it looks an easy one chase, there is sting in Sri Lanka's bowling, especially with Prabath Jayasuriya who into his 50th over of the innings. The sun is also out now, which would give them hope going into the second session, but wicket-taking deliveries are of immediate importance.

SHAFIQUE DROPPED!

Abdullah Shafique strides forward against De Silva and swats it hard over the bowlers who cups the ball but his reaction speed was a millisecond late as the ball bounces off his hands. The batters run two as the long-on fielder picks it up.

Big shout for catch turned down

Sri Lanka are just trying to push things for a wicket. Salman Agha tries to play a dab on the leg side against Dhananjaya de Silva as the ball goes past his bat and loops for Oshada Fernando at leg slip who takes it one-handed. The bowler is confident it was edge, but umpire Marais Erasmus is not interested.

RIZWAN DEPARTS!

Right on the target by Jayasuriya and its the easiest decision Kumar Dharmasena had to make all morning. Good length, on the off stump and plumb on the pads. Rizwan goes for the review, but there is nothing to indicate that it was missing the stumps or an edge.

Things not happening for Sri Lanka

Dhananjaya de Silva and Prabath Jayasuriya have continued bowling probing lines outside the off stump and on the stumps but they didn't have any luck so far. Rizwan and Shafique have comfortably threaded the ball through the gaps on the leg side and kept chipping away at the target.

Theekshana walks off the pitch

Maheesh Theekshana bowls an over and its evident that he is struggling with his right middle finger which is used to flick the carrom ball. He was struggling with a cut below the nail yesterday and he walks to the dressing room for medical attention. If he is to bowl today, the bowling fingers shouldn't have taping.

FIFTY PARTNERSHIP!

Shafique brings up the 50-run partnership with Rizwan in 103 balls with a couple of runs at deep fine leg against Jayasuriya. They have scored more freely today morning after biding time at the end of fourth day.

SRI LANKA OUT OF REVIEWS!

Jayasuriya bowls a sensational delivery to Rizwan on the fuller length which straightens up and goes narrowly past Rizwan's forward defence. It's hard to think it's not out as there was a tiny sound but umpire Kumar Dharmasena doesn't think so. Karunaratne takes a gamble and takes the one remaining review. Ultra-Edge shows no sound as the ball passes the bat and Sri Lanka look hard done by the decision.

Aggressive approach from Rizwan

Pakistan have knocked off 20 runs in the first six overs and the aggressive approach are working well. There were a couple of leading edges and some off the pads but nothing that would amount for a proper catch.

Sri Lanka lose a review

That was rather a scream than a shout for LBW. Jayasuriya angles outside off as Shafique puts his bat upfront. The ball dips and hits his lowered back thigh as Jayasuriya puts up his hands. Umpire acknowledges the decibel level in that appeal as Karunaratne goes for the review. The ball was pitching outside off and going over the stumps. One review remaining now.

There are nervous glances around the ground staff waiting with the covers at the boundary line.

Jayasuriya starts of dangerously!

Looks like a three-way tussle between Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the weather on the final's day play at  Galle. The skies are dark and there is gust of wind blowing from one end.

Prabath Jayasuriya starts off the day with an absolute ripper. The ball lands in the good length area and straightens up sharply. It misses Rizwan's bat swing by an inch and falls for the keeper. Just a single off the over.

Pakistan need Shafique in completing record chase

Hello and Welcome to the live coverage of the fifth and final day's play of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Galle. Set a mountain of 342 to chase, Pakistan's Abdullah Shafique (112 not out) and Mohammad Rizwan (7 not out) walked back at the end of day 4 with a smile, confident of chasing the remaining 120 runs on the final day.

It was a near-perfect day of batting for Pakistan, besides the magic delivery from Prabath Jayasuriya that removed Babar Azam (55). The visiting openers Imam-Ul-Haq (35) and Shafique put up 87 runs for the first wicket. A bizarre stumping removed Imam while Azhar Ali was undone by a poor shot outside off stump against Jayasuriya.

Babar and Shafique then wore down the Sri Lankan spinners with their patient play. Babar brought up his 22nd Test fifty which was followed by Shafique's second career hundred just before their partnership went past three figures. Jayasuriya then set up the Pakistan skipper beautifully before castling him from round the leg stump to bring Mohammad Rizwan to the crease.

Despite losing their talisman, the visitors are in strong position to pull of an improbable chase on the final day with seven wickets in hand. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, need three or more wickets in the first two hours of the day to wrest back the control.

Here's the match report.
