Sri Lanka win their second ODI of the year 2021, their first since the win against Bangladesh back in May. Their spinners Akila Dhananjaya (3-44) and Praveen Jayawickrama were the stars of a rain-hit first innings as they shot down the Indian middle order from a strong position of 147/3 in 23 overs. Prithvi Shaw (49), Sanju Samson (46) and Suryakumar Yadav (40) were the top scorers for India, who had five debutants for the match. Needing 227 (DLS Method) from 47 overs, Sri Lanka openers started brightly but Krishnappa Gowtham brought an end to Minod Bhanuka's stay in the sixth over. Bhanuka Rajapaksa (65 off 56 balls) and Avishka Fernando (76 off 98 balls) then added 144 runs for the second wicket, which laid the foundation for Sri Lanka's win. Rahul Chahar (3-54) was pick off the India bowlers as the visitors mounted a weak resistance at the end but it was too late for Shikhar Dhawan's side.

It's a fitting end to the final game as Akila Dhananjaya hits the winning runs for Sri Lanka who win the match by three wickets with eight overs to spare.

Chamika Karunaratne is the new batsman in as Chahar almost gets an edge to the first slip. However, he beats the batsman to the outside edge as Sanju Samson behind the wickets takes off the bails in a flash. Excellent work by the keeper.

A ripping leg-break from Rahul Chahar who finally gets the wicket of Avishka Fernando, who might well have played a match-winning 76. He gets an outside edge which falls comfortably for Prithvi Shaw at first slip. Sri Lanka need 13 runs from 64 balls.

Ramesh Mendis paddles Chahar's fuller-length ball to the deep fine-leg boundary to further bring down the equation.

Excellent attacking field for Chahar and he almost gets two in two. He spins it away from Ramesh Mendis who gets a thick edge which falls low for Prithvi Shaw at second slip, but the 21-year old spills it.

Rahul Chahar gets his first ODI wicket and its the Sri Lankan skipper! The leg-spinner flights it and lands in the full-length area as Dasun Shanaka hits it on the half-volley straight to Manish Pandey at short cover.

The bail sensors seem to have some trouble lighting up as the umpires signal for a change for the second time in this match. Did the humid weather mess with the wiring somehow?

Hardik sends a slow yorker on the middle stump which Asalanka misses completely. The umpire takes his time and raises his finger. The batsman refers the decision but there was no bat involved with the ball pitching right on the stumps. Sri Lanka need 33 runs from 15 overs.

Gowtham comes from around the wicket as Fernando steers the ball on the leg-side as Manish Pandey at mid-on fumbles a great chance.

Dhawan brings back Gowtham and Navdeep Saini but nothing is working so far. The required run rate just above 3, Asalanka and Fernando are doing it easy with singles.

Superb bowling from Sakariya! The left-armer sends a back of the hand delivery on the middle stump which grips the surface before taking off as a surprised Dhananjaya de Silva gets a glove to it. The ball soars high into the air as Sakariya runs to the striker's end and takes the catch. It was almost like a googly coming off a leg-spinner's wrist.

Relief for Sakariya who gets his first international wicket! He bowls a good length ball on the leg stump which climbs up. Rajapaksa plays it off his pads towards deep fine-leg where K. Gowtham takes a good sliding catch.

Nitish Rana drops a sitter! Sakariya bangs it short as Rajapaksa pulls him towards deep square-leg where Rana fumbles a straight catch and lets it go for a boundary.

Fernando brings up the hundred partnership with Rajapaksa with a delicate slice down the third man boundary off Gowtham.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa launches Chahar's half-volley towards deep mid-wicket as Sakariya dives and gets to the ball but cannot hold on to it as the batsman gets a boundary. Rajapaksa then brings up his maiden ODI fifty in 43 balls with a superb reverse sweep at the third man boundary.

The Zinger bails seem to have some issue lighting up which causes a short break in the play.

Avishka Fernando brings up his fifty in 52 balls with a single down fine leg. It has been a perfectly-paced innings from the Lanka opener which included four boundaries and a six.

Shikhar Dhawan throws himself to his left after Rajapaksa sweeps Nitish Rana. He gets to the ball but it doesn't stuck. Nevertheless a top effort from the Indian skipper.

Fernando brings up the hundred for his team with a sweep shot at deep fine leg. With the required run rate below 5, the hosts are in the driver's seat as of now.

Sri Lanka were unlucky in the second game but sniffed an opportunity here and they are pouncing like wounded tigers. Avishka is leading the charge while Rajapaksa is playing the second fiddle to perfection. Even though Gowtham has one wicket to his name, that's all about it. He hasn't done a lot right to be at the forefront of changes.

If Sri Lanka manage to scoop in a win here, it will mark their first win against India at home in nine years and that will be some moment for this young Sri Lanka side. It is significant once again because, in the England ODI series, Sri Lanka had lost 11 wickets in the first 10 overs at a balls/wicket ratio of 16.4. In this series, they have lost only two at a balls/wicket ratio of 90.0.

Avishka Fernando has been really good this series. In the first game, his 33 set up the base while his half-century in the second game was the reason behind Sri Lanka posting 270-plus total. Today, despite Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan employing both pacers and spinners from two ends, he has been largely unfazed. Very sure-footed with his footwork and assured in his approach, Fernando is casually navigating Sri Lanka to a memorable win.

Gowtham begins his international career with a boundary off the first ball and then bowls five wides off the second. However, he invites Bhanuka to sweep with a flighted delivery which is straight to Sakariya at short mid-wicket, who takes an excellent low catch.

Chetan Sakariya gives a bit width with his second ball and gets whacked to the point boundary by Fernando. He keeps it on the stumps and varies his length to bowls three dot balls in his first international over.

Minod Bhanuka and Avishka Fernando begin the proceedings with a single off Navdeep Saini. Bhanuka gets a leading edge off a good length ball that was moving away from him but goes over K. Gowtham at point. The pacer oversteps on the fourth ball to give away a free hit and then bowls a wide. Bhanuka finds the fielder off the free-hit and plays a dot ball to end the over.

Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan was overjoyed to win the toss and elect batting. But that it didn't last long for him as he dismissed Dushmantha Chameera for 13 in the third over. Prithvi Shaw and debutant Sanju Samson looked good as they hit the bowlers all over the park. The pair added 74 for the second wicket before Shaw was dismissed by Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka just one run short off his maiden ODI fifty. Samson also fell on 46 soon in Praveen Jayawickrama's bowling as rain halted play for more than an hour. The match resumed with a readjusted 47 overs per innings and Lankan spinners Akila Dhananjaya (3-44) and Jayawickrama (3-59) ran riot in the overcast conditions. Manish Pandey's was once again disappointed when edged Jayawickrama to the keeper, who got the trapped Hardik Pandya leg before in the 29th over few overs later. Dhananjaya then got into the act as he sent back Suryakumar Yadav, K. Gowtham and Nitish Rana in quick succession. With the score at 195/8, debutant Rahul Chahar and Navdeep Saini put up 29 in 61 deliveries before Chamika Karunaratne dismissed Chahar with a short ball. Chameera quickly wrapped India's innings at 225 when got the wicket of Saini with a short ball.

Chameera bangs it short as the ball hurries on to Saini's bat and takes a thick edge for a comfortable catch to Avishka Fernando at gully. That brings an end to India's innings which looked like its headed towards 300 at one time.

Karunaratne breaks Chahar's resilience! Him and Saini's partnership of 29 from 61 balls comes to end as Chahar top edges a short ball from the pacer who calls for the catch and takes it.

Saini looks settled down and is facing the pacers quite well now! He drives Chameera through the off-side for a single and a double before hit on the chest by a short ball. He looks to be in pain, but good enough to continue.

It's a tough task for debutant Rahul Chahar and Navdeep Saini to navigate from this position. They bring up the 200 for the visitors are very cautious in order to see out Dhananjaya and Jayawickrama.

Another wicket for Dhananjaya! India are completely at sea. Nitish Rana tries to drive a flighted delivery but the ball turns away from taking a faint edge safely in the keeper's hands.

Plumb! Dhananjaya flights the ball going for the yorker length, as Gowtham tries to paddle it and completely misses. The ball hits him on the pad and its an easy decision for the umpire. The batsman attempts one last time as he refers, but there was nothing to do, the ball was right on the middle stump and the debutant has to walk back. Sri Lanka are turning it around.

Another excellent review from Lanka skipper Shanaka! Dhananjaya bowls on the off-stump, the ball grips the surface before turning in slightly as it strikes the batsman on the front pad. Suryakumar tries to push it on the front foot but doesn't bring the bat to the ball as the fielders all go up. Shanaka doesn't hesitate even for a second before referring it. The ball hit the pad first and was hitting the off-stump and Suryakumar has to walk back. Big blow for India.

Excellent bowling from Jayawickrama! He bowls it slower through the air in the good length area, asking Pandya to wait for it to pitch . The ball rises straight before turning away from his bat and hits the thigh guard. The bowler goes up, but the umpire is not interested. Shanaka goes for the review and the impact was hitting the middle stump. Crucial breakthrough for the hosts.

Chameera bowls on the pads and Hardik Pandya hits him to two boundaries on the leg-side. The pacer bowls short and on the leg stump again as Pandya steers him at sweeper for a couple.

Another wicket for Jayawickrama! Manish Pandey tries to find space on the off-side as he strides forward the spinner's fuller length ball outside off and gets a thick edge which floats into the keeper's gloves.

Suryakumar Yadav resumes India's innings with two beautiful on-drives off Dushmantha Chameera to the sweeper boundary.

Play will resume at 6.30 PM (IST) with the game readjusted to 47 overs each. The innings break has also been crunched due to the rain interruption. Two bowlers can bowl a maximum 10 overs, three can bowl a maximum of 8 overs.

Jayawickrama lands the ball full and outside off-stump as Suryakumar attempts a sweep shot and misses as the ball raps the bottom of the pads. The umpire raises his finger as the batsman refers it. We have a long wait for the ball tracking to kick in. The impact was hitting the off-stump but the ball was pitches well outside the line. Suryakumar was walking back when the umpire reverses his decision. The Lankan players were celebrating after watching the impact on the big screen but it all proved to be premature

Nice length from Jayawickrama and Samson falls four short of a fifty. The spinner pitches it in the good length zipped through the air as Samson comes forward and tries to hit it over extra cover, but Avishka Fernando leaps from his position to take a good catch.

Dasun Shanaka joins the attack as he frustrates Shaw by bowling outside the off-stump. He bowls the final ball on the middle-stump as Shaw misses a flick as the ball thuds on to his pads. The umpire waits for a moment before raising the finger. The opener asks for a referral but there was no bat involved in it while the ball was pitched right in the centre and was hitting the leg stump. Shaw will have wait a while for maiden ODI fifty.

Jayawickrama gets a packed off side as pitches it full outside the off stump. Shaw shuffles across the stumps launches him to the sweeper boundary first and then sweeps the spinner to deep mid-wicket and deep square-leg boundaries to bring up the hundred in the 15th over.

Samson brings up the fifty partnership between him and Shaw in 61 ball with a superb boundary at deep extra-cover off Praveen Jayawickrama's bowling.

Karunaratne concedes just one run off the first five balls but is pulled away to the sweeper boundary by Samson. The ball hits one of the crows perched on the outfield but still manages to hit the ropes.

Samson breaks the shackles by stepping out of his crease against Dhananjaya and hits over the bowler's head for a big six.

Shaw dissects the offside field to the deep extra-cover boundary to bring up the fifty. Samson has been patient in his approach so far. Shanaka is persisting with Chameera who is getting some good bounce off the surface.

Accurate from Chameera! The speedster gets the ball to move away from the middle stump as Dhawan gets a feather edge which carries to the keeper. It brings ODI debutant Sanju Samson to the crease.

Akila Dhananjaya is given the second over as pitches the first balls outside off which Dhawan drives through the off-side for boundaries. The southpaw is hit on the pad by Dhananjaya's penultimate ball as the bowler asks Shanaka to refer. The impact was outside the line and was missing off-stump. Poor referral by Lanka. The spinner hits the pads once again on the final ball which looks closer to the off-stump, but Shanaka decides to not go for a referral.

Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw walk into the middle while Dushmantha Chameera opens the proceedings for the hosts. There is good movement off the pitch as Chameera's leg-side wide drifts away from the keeper's reach to a boundary. He bowls one outside off stump as Shaw gets an inside edge which bounces over the first slip and keeper to run away to the boundary.

In build up to the 2023 men's ODI World Cup, bilateral series aren't going to have dead rubbers as each win carries points for the ICC World Cup Super League, which will decide the qualification for the mega event. Today's match is very important for Sri Lanka who are second bottom of that table with 12 points from 11 matches. India are fourth in the table and will have the chance to go third if they clean sweep this series.
