ENG end World Cup 2023 with convincing victory: As it happened

PAK 244/10(43.3)
04:28 PM IST
Four matches to go!

And with that, we have just one more game left in the World Cup group stages as India take on the Netherlands in Bengaluru tomorrow.

In the semis, India will take on New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday (November 15), while South Africa play Australia in Kolkata on Thursday (November 16).

Keep yourself tuned into Cricket.com for all the updates. Till then, it's goodbye.

Let's hear from the captains

"If we had won South Africa match, could've been a different story. But yes, have made mistakes in bowling, batting and fielding. We gave 20-30 runs extra. Bowled few loose deliveries. Our spinners haven't taken wickets. That's had a big effect. If spinners don't take wickets in the middle overs, you struggle. We have to sit together. Let's see. Will take positives and discuss our mistakes also," Pakistan captain Babar Azam

"Nice to put in a good performance and finish that way. Ultimately it's been a disappointing tournament. Lots to reflect on," England captain Jos Buttler

Agha shines amid gloom

Just when Salman Agha was looking to get a move on, he was dismissed by David Willey, caught at mid-on. That pretty much meant curtains fo Pakistan, who were already in deep trouble then. Nevertheless, he played an excellent innings and kept fighting. His on side game seemed to be on point today.

A job well done by England bowlers.

All over

And it's over - for both England and Pakistan. England win the game by 93 runs, after an entertaining 53-run final wicket stand between Haris Rauf (35) and Mohammad Wasim (16*).

However, that does not change the fact that England and Pakistan are out of the World Cup. As a consolation, both teams have qualified for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Pakistan were never really in it after losing their openers early in pursuit of 338. England were well set up thanks to fifties from Jonny Bairstow (59), Joe Root (60) and Ben Stokes (84). After putting up a mammoth total on the board, it was definitely England who had the upper hand and that's how it panned out in the end.

There were plenty of starts for Pakistan, but none managed to convert it into anything substantial. Salman Agha scored 51, but that was never going to be enough with no support from the other end.

An easy victory for England in the end. They end a disappointing campaign with back-to-back wins.

PAK 244/9(42.5)

Fifty stand

An unlikely 50-run stand between Rauf and Wasim. Who would have thought it? They have taken just 31 deliveries to get there. The margin of defeat has gone down considerably, but England are still very much on top. How long can the last wicket partnership last? It was been sheer entertainment so far.

PAK 209/9(40.0)

Rauf has some fun

A few big hits from Haris Rauf has taken Pakistan past 200. They are just one wicket away from succumbing to a massive loss, but Rauf is ensuring that he goes back home with a few big hits under his belt. However, Pakistan have lost four wickets in the last 10 overs, and as a result, find themselves in this position.

PAK 191/9(37.4)

ENG almost there

Pakistan are now just one wicket away from a huge defeat as Gus Atkinson has Shaheen Afridi trapped leg-before. A full delivery pitches on leg stump and would have gone on to hit off as the ball tracking shows. Afridi's little cameo comes to an end as a result.

Century for Willey

David Willey has his 100th wicket in his final ODI for England. Salman Agha, who brought up his fifty looks to clear mid-on, but Ben Stokes takes a simple catch. This has been a dismal batting display by Pakistan, who are set to exit the World Cup with a massive defeat.

Rashid has another

Another one bites the dust. Rashid bowls a wrong one which goes between bat and ball, crashing into the stumps. Shadab Khan looks befuddled. This is top-class stuff from Rashid and England spinners in general, who are perhaps just moments away from wrapping up this game and heading home with a massive victory.

Most wickets by an ENG spinner in a WC edition:

Perhaps Pakistan's last hope - Iftikhar Ahmed - has been dismissed looking to go after Moeen Ali. He charges down the track looking to clear mid-off, but Malan running back pouches it safely. Pakistan are in deep trouble now.

ENG edge closer

Pakistan have scored 56 runs but have also lost two wickets in the last 10 overs. The asking rate is well over nine at the moment, and there seems to be no way back for them.

Rashid gets his first

Bowled around his legs! Saud Shakeel misses the ball completely, as he looks to guide the ball past the wicketkeeper. Adil Rashid has his first wicket and Pakistan are down in the dumps at the moment. Their innings is going nowhere.

Shakeel b Rashid 29 (37)

PAK 108/4(25.0)

What are Pakistan trying to achieve?

Pakistan need to score at over nine an over. They are already four wickets down. They are showing no intent whatsoever to get close to the target. They have not hit a boundary in almost six overs. How exactly do they expect to make a fight of this? Time to play Dil Dil Pakistan at the Eden Gardens, perhaps? That might work.

PAK 100/4(22.3)
02:35 PM IST
Moeen gets Rizwan

Cleaned up! Rizwan goes for a big hoick, charging down the track, but misses the ball completely. The ball crashes into the wickets, but Rizwan is down and is being attended to at the moment. But he has to walk back to pavilion when he is able to. Pakistan are in deep trouble now, having lost both Babar and Rizwan.

ENG remain on top

Pakistan have lost further pace in the last 10-over period and are really behind in the run-chase as a result. The asking rate is well over eight now. Both Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan have not gotten going yet and with every ball, England seem to be closing in.

Pakistan really need to up the ante in the next 10 overs, else this could get out of their hands.

PAK 61/3(14.0)

Babar perishes

A soft dismissal for Babar Azam, who is once again caught at mid-wicket. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME HE HAS BEEN CAUGHT IN THAT POSITION THIS WORLD CUP.

Adil Rashid takes a simple catch to give Gus Atkinson his first wicket of the match. Atkinson has broken the 51-run stand between Rizwan and Babar. Pakistan will once again have to rebuild.

Babar Azam finishes with 319 runs at 45.57, SR 83.50, 50s: 4

ENG on top

Babar has played some delightful strokes already. Rizwan, though, has not gotten going yet. England are very much on top at the end of the first powerplay, but if Babar and Rizwan find some rhythm and get going, it could make for an interesting chase.

The 43 runs scored by Pakistan are their joint-lowest in this WC. In the first match against the Netherlands, they were 43/3 in the first 10 overs.

England have not lost grip of the game since they put up 337 on the board. David Willey has delivered with the ball sending Pakistan openers Shafique and Fakhar back to the pavilion early.

England have used just Woakes and Willey so far. Not too long before we see the spinners introduced.

Babar, Rizwan key for PAK

Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam have managed to keep the scoreboard ticking since losing the openers. The asking rate is over seven now and these two have to score a huge chunk of the remaining runs if Pakistan are to have any chance.

Willey has his second

GONE! Fakhar Zaman looks to break the shackles, but finds the man at mid-off. He was bogged down with some excellent bowling and in the end, throws his wicket away. David Willey has his second of the night. Pakistan have lost both their openers in no time.

A superb straight drive by Babar Azam. Willey delivers yet another in-swinger, but Babar is up for it. First runs on the board for Pakistan. They will need plenty more of that, if they want to make a match of this.

Early wicket for ENG

David Willey, in his final match for England, picks up a wicket off the second delivery of the innings. Abdullah Shafique plays across the line against an in-swinging delivery and pays the price. This is just the start England would have wanted after putting up 337.

Ben Stokes steps up again

Ben Stokes slammed his third 50-plus score in a row today and played a key role in helping his side to 337. He was equally good on the leg and offside today.

Was Rauf really bad today?

Not really. Yes, he conceded 31 runs from three overs in his first spell, but look how well he bounced back in his remaining overs.

Haris Rauf in this match:

1st spell: Overs - 3, Wkts - 0, Runs - 31, Econ - 10.3

Next three spells: Overs - 7, Wkts - 3, Runs - 33, Econ - 4.7, Avg - 11, Bowl SR - 14

...but he has an unwanted record to his name

ENG 337/9(50.0)

PAK need 338

And England finish off on a high. Pakistan have managed to pick up seven wickets in the last 10 overs, but have also conceded 97 runs, which has taken them to 337.

Root (60) and Stokes (84) had set the platform with a run-a-ball 132-run stand for the third wicket and that has helped England reach a huge total in Kolkata. This after Bairstow (59) and Malan (31) put on 82 for the first wicket to give England a brisk start.

Rauf. Waseem and Afridi were among the wickets today, but were a tad too expensive than they would have liked.

Pakistan were poor on the field and also dropped a couple of key catches, and as a result, could not choke England for long periods of time. Pakistan, who are no longer in contention for a place in the semis, will look to sign off with a victory.

Pakistan bowlers today:

Spin - 20-0-120-1, ER 6

Pace - 30-1-210-7, ER 7

Can Pakistan make a match of this? They need to chase this total down in 6.4 overs to make the semis. Safe to say that their World Cup campaign has come to an end. Join us for the chase in just a bit.

Unwanted record for Rauf

Most runs conceded by a bowler in a World Cup edition:

Adil Rashid (ENG) - 526 in 2019

Dilshan Madushanka (SL) - 525 in 2023

Mitchell Starc (AUS) - 502  in 2019

Despite conceding 526 runs, Adil Rashid went on to win the World Cup in 2019. Rauf's campaign will come to an end today.

300 up for ENG

An outrageous ramp shot off Haris Rauf by Harry Brook brings up England's 300.  Brook and Jos Buttler have batted well so far, and have given England momentum after they lost Stokes and Root in quick succession. Can they add another 30-35 from here?

ENG 257/4(42.2)
11:39 AM IST
Root perishes

And now Root too has to walk back. The two well-set batters Stokes and Root have been dismissed in quick succession - both by Shaheen - and England now will have to reassess given that they have two new batters in the middle. Root looks to push it on the on side, but a leading edge takes the ball to Shadab at backward point, who takes a good catch running backwards.

Root has, however, struggled to get going against spin today.

Joe Root against pace and spin today:

vs Pace - Runs 27, Balls 29, SR 93.1, BPB 14.5

vs Spin - Runs 33, Balls 43, SR 76.74, BPB 21.5

Harry Brook joins his skipper Jos Buttler in the middle. Can England keep Pakistan to under 300? That will be some achievement.

GONE! The 132-run stand between Stokes and Root comes to an end as Shaheen Afridi bowls a terrific ins-swinging delivery to get rid of the former. There is a hint of reverse swing. Wasim and Shaheen will be key, as a result. Nevertheless, this was yet another terrific innings by Stokes. Will this be his last ODI innings though?

PAK on the back foot

England have the platform. Stokes is nearing yet another century and Joe Root has gone past fifty. With wickets in hand, England will be looking to add another 100 runs from here at least. Can Pakistan stop the run-flow?

Pakistan have scored 70 runs in the last 10 overs without losing a wicket. Stokes, especially, has taken risks, which has paid off. Root too has started to cut loose, and unless Pakistan get 2-3 quick wickets, they will be chasing a huge target.

ENG 209/2(35.2)

Stokes on fire

Ominous signs for Pakistan as Ben Stokes continues to smash the bowlers around. He is showing part-time spinner Agha Salman no respect whatsoever. He is smashing them all around the park. Stokes and Root have brought up their 100-run stand as well. Much-needed for England.

Pakistan need to stop this momentum, they will be chasing somewhere around 320-330 otherwise.

ENG bounce back after blip

Root and Stokes bring England back into the contest after a mundane 10 overs between 11 and 20. They have scored at a healthy rate in the last 10 overs and Pakistan's fielding has certainly played a part in England's resurrection.

Stokes was dropped early by Shaheen and he is now taking full toll on the team. Stokes and Root have put on over 50 for the third wicket and Pakistan have now reached a stage where they are desperate for a wicket.

ENG 158/2(27.0)

Stokes on the attack

Ben Stokes is making Pakistan pay. He's bound to do that if you give him a chance. He is getting the boundaries flowing, the latest ones coming against Shaheen. He gets three off the over and England are suddenly cruising. Stokes and Root have brought up their fifty stand as well.

Root is clearly playing second-fiddle, while Stokes in the last couple of overs had made his intentions clear.

Haris Rauf has conceded 513 runs in this edition, 154 runs more than their highest run scorer Mohammad Rizwan (359) and 234 runs more than their best batting pair, Rizwan & Saud Shakeel (279). He is the first Pakistan bowler to concede 500+ runs in a World Cup edition.

ENG 112/2(20.0)

PAK pull it back

Pakistan pull things back with a couple of wickets in overs 11-20 and have kept the scoring rate down too, giving away just 40 and have picked up a couple of wickets as well. England have two relatively new batters in Joe Root and Ben Stokes, at the crease, who will look to rebuild.

Pakistan have been let down by their fielding on more than one occasion, which is something they would look to address.

ENG 108/2(18.2)

Fifty for Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow brings up his fifty off just 52 deliveries. This is just his second fifty of the tournament - his first in seven innings. He needed that. England openers Bairstow and Malan are showing no mercy on the Pakistan bowlers. They have pounced on every loose delivery, and there have been quite a few of those in the first 10 overs. Pakistan need a couple of quick wickets to cut the run-flow and bounce back in the contest.

What's at stake?

Hello and welcome to Cricket.com's coverage of Match 44 of the ICC World Cup 2023 between England and Pakistan at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. This is the penultimate match of the group stages and we have a total of four more matches after this to look forward to this World Cup.

England are not in contention to make it to the Semi-final, but Pakistan have a mathematical chance of progressing, albeit a miniscule one. For Pakistan to make it through, they have to win the game by 287 runs - which seems like a herculean task. Safe to say, not a long rides on this match.

However, a win in the World Cup is something either team will be taking lightly and that is what they would want to get out of it. A win for Pakistan will see them reach 10 points. They would certainly rue the one-wicket loss against South Africa. Had they won that, a win is all they would have needed today to set-up a semi-final clash against India.

Babar Azam has not given up yet, still eyeing the top-four spot.

A win today for England will put them in pole position for an automatic qualification for the Champions Trophy 2025, which is nothing short of a consolation for them at this point, but it is a competition they would want to participate in.
