India seal semifinal spot with 23-run win

NEP 179/9(20.0)

A six to finish

Short and hammered over long on by Karan KC to end the game with a six. Nepal fall 23 runs short. India will advance to the quarterfinal but a decent effort from Nepal in this knockout game. Karan KC ends with 18 off 13 balls. Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi with three wickets each.

Of course, Yashasvi Jaiswal's hundred set the platform for India alongside Rinku Singh's cameo of 37 runs from 15 balls. That late blitz by Rinku created a big difference for India.

That is it from our coverage for this game. Thanks tuning in. See you.

Eight down

Just a matter of formality now. Nepal are falling like a house of cards at the back end here. Gulshan Jha is the latest batter to walk back. Full again from Arshdeep Singh. Jha swigs across the line but straight to long on fielder. India only two strikes away.

Sai Kishore showing superb ethics in the field on his international debut for India. Runs in from long on and dives forward to take a brilliant catch. Nepal are seven down now.

Six down

Another batter looked to clear the boundary ropes consistently but is holed out. Sundeep Jora began the over carting Arshdeep Singh for two sixes in the first half of the innings. But Arshdeep has struck back on the fourth delivery, with a fullish delivery under the bat swing of Jora. Flat hit straight to the long off fielder. Arshdeep and India breathe easy.

Bishnoi to the rescue again

Ravi Bishnoi in action again as he cuts down Airee's cameo. Shortish and quicker around off. Dipendra Singh Airee goes back and pulls it to the wide long-on region. Sai Kishore settles under it and takes a sharp catch. Is this the game for India?

Airee on the charge

0 6 6 6 2 1

A much needed over for Nepal as Dipendra Singh Airee ups the ante. India move to their sixth bowler, Shivam Dube and Airee clearly saw it as a chance. 21 runs of this second over of Dube. Airee first hooked for a six and then unleashed back to back pull strokes for a maximum each. Chants of "Nepal, Nepal" at the venue as the Nepalese fans have woken up. They have high hopes from Airee, the man who broke the record for the fastest T20I fifty (9 balls) when Nepal played Mongolia. Airee is 30 off 13 balls now. The asking rate for Nepal, however, is still 3.8.

Two wickets in three balls

Ravi Bishnoi pouches two wickets in three balls to dent Nepal further. A tag team effort at the ropes between Rinku Singh and Rahul Tripathi to catch Kushal Malla. Then, to finish the over, Bishnoi does all the work by himself, trapping Rohit Paudel, the opposition captain in front of the stumps. Time is running out for Nepal and now the resources too to chase this down.

Halfway mark

Halfway mark in the chase and Nepal continue to search for momentum. Only 27 runs in the four overs since the powerplay restrictions were lifted. The asking rate has shot up to 13 runs per over. India have another six overs of spin bowling to go.

Sai Kishore picks his first for India

Sai Kishore ends Kushel Bhurtel's misery. He picks his first wicket in India's colors, thanks to an excellent catch from Avesh Khan. Flighted ball on the stumps. Bhurtel gets inside the line and looks to scoop it over short fine leg but there is no pace on the ball and Bhurtel ends up lobbing it in front of short fine leg. Avesh dives in and completes the catch as Nepal lose their second wicket.

Bhurtel's innings was going nowhere. He walks back scoring 28 at a sluggish strike rate of 87.5.

Powerplay done

End of the powerplay overs. It is a cliched statement but India will again be the happier side, conceding only 4 runs in the powerplay. Nepal have done well in terms of finding boundaries. There have been at least one every over. A total of six fours and two sixes constitute nearly 80 percent so far in boundaries. However, India have done well in bowling dot balls and keeping the progress of Nepal's run chase in check. Not to forget, they have picked a wicket too. India on top here. Nepal need to make a move before it gets too late.

Avesh hits back

It was turning out to be a positive start from Nepal with a boundary in each of the first four overs. A pick up hit over the covers for six Aasif Sheikh further increased the pressure. But the Madhya Pradesh bowler has struck back to get rid of Sheikh. Folls the batter with a hit-the-deck delivery. Sheikh swings but not convincingly. Edged to the wicketkeeper and Jitesh Sharma, the debutant, doesn't make any mistake. First breakthrough for India.

Tight start from Arshdeep

A good first over from Arshdeep Singh to begin proceedings. He conceded a boundary on the second ball when Kushal Bhurtel drove one square of the wicket for four runs. However, Arshdeep came back strong to keep the first over limited to 8.

25 from final over; India finish at 202

4 6 4 1 2wd 6 2

25 runs from the final over bowled by Abinash Bohar. An extremely profitable over for India as Rinku Singh tears into the right-arm seamer to lift India to 202. It could have been 29 runs but Dipendra Singh Airee pulled off a brilliant save at the deep mid-wicket boundary to keep that stroke to 2.

Rinku Singh finishes 37 not out from 15 balls (two fours, four sixes). In between him and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India found 137 from only 64 deliveries. It was a struggle from the other end, with Gaikwad, Dube, Tilak and Jitesh accumulating 57 runs between them off 56 balls.

Nepal would rue the final over. Otherwise, it has been a terrific comeback from them on a smaller ground. The off-spinner Airee the pick of the bowlers for them with figures of 2/31 in his four overs. While he conceded at only 7.8 runs per over, no other bowler could keep their economy under 8.7.

A great effort from both sides. However, Nepal would feel they are not out of it. India will reckon they have a better chance with three spinners in their attack. We will back with the run chase.

Untill then, make yourself familiar with Jaiswal's game with a glance at his wagon wheel today. A strike-rate of 233.3 in the on side.

Rinku with a maximum

Rinku Singh has replaced Yashasvi Jaiswal with the sole intention of keeping the run rate going. His fourth ball of the innings and he times Abinash Bohara down the ground for a maximum. First batter to hit a six in this innings except for Jaiswal. India need a few more of those as they will be eyeing 200 here.

Gone next ball

Oh, that is taken at short third man. Jaiswal is out soon after completing his hundred. A soft and anti-climactic dismissal this. Jaiswal takes the ball on the full and bunts it straight to the short third fielder who makes no mistake. Dipendra Singh Airee gets his second wicket of the game and Jaiswal departs after making a brilliant ton.

Ton up, Jaiswal

A single into the on-side brings up the hundred for Yashasvi Jaiswal. What a knock! He scooped the last ball for a four. He thought it was a six and celebrated only to realize he is still a run short. Well, he has done it next ball. He is a bit embarrassed celebrating it with his helmet off, primarily because he had already celebrated on the previous ball. It is a bit hilarious but a big moment nevertheless.

First Indian batter to score a hundred in Asian Games and it is the first hundred of Jaiswal's brief T20I career (this is his sixth game). Tremendous knock from the young opener considering how his batting partners have struggled to maintain a strike rate of 100. Here, he has reached three figures in only 48 balls, hitting eight fours and seven sixes.

Jaiswal into the 90s

Even Yashasvi Jaiswal had slowed down amidst Nepal's fight back but he has instilled some momentum back in the innings with a four and a six off successive deliveries. First a four through the covers while making room but hold on for this mega-hit. Jaiswal has his smoked the ball outside the ground here, the first six landing outside the venue today. He moves to 92.

Caught & Bowled!

Well, the wickets keep falling at the other end. Jitesh Sharma bites the dust. Sandeep Lamichhane in the wickets column. He sees Jitesh Sharma advancing and nicely pulls back the length. Sharma goes through with the big heave across the line and ends up slicing the ball up in the air. Lamichhane moves to his left and takes a simple catch as India lose their third wicket now.

Tilak knocked over

One brings two and Nepal have struck the second time soon after removing Ruturaj Gaikwad. Tilak Varma heads back for 2. Sompal Kami gets into the wickets column.

A slow start for Tilak and he chops one on trying to pull the ball square of the wicket. The ball hurried on after pitching in the middle stump line. Inside edge onto the stumps. The dot ball pressure gets to him. Jitesh Sharma is the new batter in. Nepal crawling back in the game.

First wicket

First wicket right after the opening duo amassed a 100-run stand. Ruturaj Gaikwad tries to break the shackles but it has been that 'tough day at work' for the Indian skipper with the bat today.

Full and quick, around off. Gaikwad got low, looking to clear the deep mid-wicket fence. He gets the height but does not the distance and Rohit Paudel stationed at the boundary takes an easy catch. Dipendra Singh Airee makes the opening breakthrough as Indian skipper Gaikwad returns to the hut. 103 runs for the opening wicket in only 59 deliveries. You could not have asked for a better start to the Asian Games legacy of India's Men's Cricket Team. We are also nearing the halfway mark in the innings. Tilak Varma is the new batter for India.

Fifty for Jaiswal

And YJB reaches his half-century in roaring fashion. Pumps Sandeep Lamichhane over long off. He is 52 not out off only 22 balls with five sixes. Second T20I fifty for the left-handed opener. What a knock and what a start for India.

Powerplay done

Dipendra Singh Airee finishes the powerplay on a strong note for Nepal, conceding only a couple of runs in the sixth over. Some puff of dust already so there will be a lot of grip and turn for the spinners. The powerplay is done and India would be happy to pile up 63 runs on the board. However, batting can get trickier from here on. Having said that, Sandeep Lamicchane is gearing up to bowl now.

50 up

Yashasvi Jaiswal brings up the 50 on board for India with a couple of runs off Dipendra Singh Airee's off-spin bowling. Only 3.5 overs required to notch up the 50-run stand. Jaiswal is the aggressor, scoring 34 off 13 deliveries (including four sixes). Ruturaj Gaikwad, the skipper at the other end, is taking his time. He has contributed 11 off 10 balls.

Back to back sixes for YBJ

Enough sighters for Yashasvi Jaiswal and he will take on the Nepal bowlers now. Back to back sixes in the second over of the game. Karan KC, the right arm seamer, goes full and Jaiswal smashed it over the cow corner. Follows it up with a swiveled pull stroke for another maximum. The boundaries are small and Jaiswal is a tough batter to contain. He has expressed his intentions already.

Sompal Kami starts with a wide

Not the tightest of starts from Sompal Kami. He swings the first ball of the game but past Yashasvi Jaiswal's leg stump. The wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh also fumbles behind the stumps, allowing an easy single. Two runs on the board for India without any legitimate deliveries bowled yet.

PLAYING XIS

India field three spinners

India have no one but three spinners in their XI - Washington Sundar, R Sai Kishore and Ravi Bishnoi. It will be interesting to see how this decision fare given Nepal have decent batters of spin bowling and we will have short boundaries at this venue. Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh are two specialist pacers. Jitesh Sharma will keep wickets. Nepal will rely heavily on Sandeep Lamichhane, their first bowler to pick over 200 wickets in international cricket, a feat he attained during Nepal's 138-run victory against Maldives two days ago (October 1)

India XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad ( c ), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, R Sai Kishore, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh

Nepal XI: Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh (wk), Sundeep Jora, Gulsan Jha, Rohit Paudel ( c ), Kushal Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, Sompal Kami, Karan KC, Abinash Bohara, Sandeep Lamichhane

Build-Up!

The 19th edition of the Asian Games are in full swing, and things are about to go up a notch in Hangzhou as we approach the quarter-final stage of Men's Cricket event. It all kicks off with India taking on Nepal in the 1st Quarter Final at the ZJUT Cricket Field. On paper, it is India versus Nepal. It is the World No.1 side vs. World No.16. It is quite lopsided. But the format is such that it is now a knock-out game that is facing the Indians. The nature of the format is such that one wrong step and you could be facing a billion eyeballs staring at you, startling. Hence, it is a challenge first up for the Men in Blue, a new batch of it rather.
