Lawrence replaces injured Crawley in England’s squad for Sri Lanka Tests

The series would begin on August 21 (Wednesday) with the first Test at Old Trafford in Manchester

A fractured finger has ruled out regular English opener Zak Crawley from the team’s upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home. Dan Lawrence would open the innings from the home side as he is named in the 14-man squad for the forthcoming fixtures which are part of the World Test Championships 2023-25. The announcement was made on August 4 (Sunday) by the England Men's selection panel of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

The series would begin on August 21 (Wednesday) with the first Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. Dillon Pennington, part of the English squad for the West Indies series, has also been ruled out with a hamstring injury, with Ollie Stone replacing him.

Jordan Cox has been added to the squad as a spare batter. For the 23-year-old, it was as surprising a call-up as it could get. While speaking to Sky Sports, he said, "I've been thinking more about the white-ball side of it. I just thought there are so many good players out there, and I thought, I'm not going to be in that yet, if ever, so to get this call was pretty awesome.”

While Dan Lawrence has played 11 Tests, scoring 551 runs and taking three wickets, Cox is yet to debut for England in any format. However, since joining Essex from Kent, the right-hander has amassed 763 runs at an average of 69.36 in the County Championships 2024-25.
