Laura Wolvaardt becomes South Africa’s all-time T20 WC leading run-scorer

Wolvaardt went past Dane van Niekerk’s record to become Proteas’ all-time leading run-scorer in T20 World Cups

History was scripted when South Africa’s skipper Laura Wolvaardt edged one past Beth Mooney’s reach to become the country’s leading run-scorer in T20 World Cup history on October 17.

The right-handed batter has been in stellar form, scoring 158 runs in the ongoing edition, averaging a staggering 52.67 with the bat. She continued that form here against Australia, with two boundaries by the end of the third over in Dubai. Incidentally, Wolvaardt became the first South African women’s cricketers to go past 500 runs.

It is not surprising that the South African opener has only four single-digit scores in the competition, showing a great level of consistency. Back in 2023, too, Wolvaardt had a stellar World Cup season, with 230 runs in that edition, averaging a staggering 46, and three fifties.

Prior to Wolvaardt, Dane van Niekerk held the record with 493 runs in T20 World Cups. Marizanne Kapp, who herself has scored 445 runs in the competition's history, is third on the list, followed by Mignon du Preez, who has 361 runs.

In her maiden edition as captain, Wolvaardt has amassed 165 runs in just five games thus far and has continued to scale new heights with her batting display.
