Less than two days after its inception, the Lanka T10 Super League has come under a match-fixing cloud with the owner of Galle Marvels, Prem Thakkur, arrested on match-fixing charges.
ESPNCricinfo reports that Thakkur was arrested on Thursday and was produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court on Friday. It is believed that he has been remanded till December 16.
Thakkur, it is believed, has been arrested under the 2019 Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act.
“He was arrested at a hotel in Kandy, where the Lanka T10 tournament is underway. It is understood that a foreign player had flagged a fixing approach made by Thakkur,” the ESPNCricinfo report further read.
This is the second instance this year of a major franchise owner in Sri Lanka getting arrested. Earlier in the year, Lanka Premier League (LPL) franchise Dambulla Thunders owner Tamim Rahman was arrested on suspicion of match-fixing.
The Dambulla Thunders franchise was then terminated, effective immediately.
The inaugural Lanka T10 league has already got off to a very inauspicious start, with five of the first eight matches getting abandoned due to rain.
