On August 25 (Sunday), the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Leicestershire’s quick Josh Hull will replace ‘injured’ Mark Wood in the squad for the remainder of the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
Wood limped off with a right thigh muscle injury on the fourth day’s play in Old Trafford, which has now ruled him out of the remainder of the three-match Test series. The left-arm pacer Hull has a realistic chance of making his Test debut on August 29 (Thursday) at Lord’s.
"Leicestershire's 20-year-old left-arm seamer Josh Hull has received his first senior call-up to replace Wood in the squad for the remaining two Tests at Lord's, starting on Thursday, and at the Kia Oval on Friday, 6 September,” read ECB’s release.
"Hull, who stands at 6ft 7in, has been a pivotal figure in Leicestershire's bowling attack and played a crucial role in their 2023 One-Day Cup victory. Earlier this month, he made his debut for the Lions against the Sri Lanka tourists, taking five for 74 in the Lions' seven-wicket victory."
It would make him only the fourth left-arm pacer in this century to play Tests for England, after Ryan Sidebottom, Sam Curran and Alan Mullally. The left-arm pacer has the ability to clock up 90mph, with 15 wickets @ 58, but is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Wood in terms of pace.
