Jeremy Gordon delighted to redeem himself vs Ireland after US whacking
The Canada pacer delighted a sensational spell against Ireland, finishing with 2/16
After giving away 33 runs in the 14th over against the United States of America (USA) in the first game of the T20 World Cup 2024, Canada pacer Jeremy Gordon redeemed himself by bowling an excellent spell against Ireland on June 7 (Friday) in Dallas.
After putting up 137 on the board, Canada needed a disciplined bowling performance and Jeremy Gordon stepped up to the plate with figures of 2/16, which included the wickets of Paul Stirling and Mark Adair. The tall fast bowler is delighted to have made a contribution that resulted in Canada's first ever win in the T20 World Cup.
"Honestly, I'm very happy obviously to contribute to the team success because I personally felt my over is what kind of gave it away the last game, so for me to come back and help the team get over the line to me, I feel like I've done a good job so I'm quite happy," Gordon said in the post-match presentation.
"I think just coming back from obviously the first game where we thought we should have won that game. I feel like all three departments, we kind of ticked today, so it's a magnificent win for us."
Canada got to 137 thanks to Nicholas Kirton who scored 49, with Shreyas Movva to contributing with a useful 37. Gordon felt that it was a good total in the end. "For us it was basically just kind of playing the ball in its merit," Gordon said.
"Essentially try to bat as deep as possible. Whenever there's a bad ball, we tried to put it away and the goal again was to bat deep, and the deeper we batted, we figured if you get about 130 to140, it's a relatively good score on this wicket because of the variable bounce and stuff like that. I think we actually achieved that today."
With a win over Ireland, Gordon says his side is confident of taking on India and Pakistan next. "There's definitely a lot of confidence - so for us obviously, it's to do the basics right and to be disciplined," Gordon reckons.
"It's not for us to get ahead of ourselves - basically just obviously appreciate the win, but then just go back to the drawing board keep working our games because like I said, it's going to be Pakistan and India. Those are obviously two of the better teams in the world currently so for us, its again ticking the box in terms of being disciplined in all three areas; batting, bowling and fielding.
"I feel like if we do that, we might give a good account for ourselves in a day, and who knows what could happen."
Canada will look to carry their momentum into the match against Pakistan, who they take on in New York on June 11 (Tuesday).
