Jay Shah favourite to become next ICC chair: Reports

The ICC confirmed on August 20 (Tuesday) that incumbent chair Greg Barclay will resign at the end of November

On August 20 (Tuesday), the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that Greg Barclay would not be seeking a third term and will step down from his post as the official chairperson of the ICC at the end of November when his current term comes to an end.

Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020 before being re-elected in 2022.

On the back of this development, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Jay Shah will take over as the new chairperson of the board. The incumbent BCCI Secretary is said to have been backed by both England (ECB) and Australia (CA).

“Two sources with knowledge of discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations are confidential, confirmed the move late on Tuesday night,” Sydney Morning Herald reported.

“While Barclay was eligible for another two-year term, Shah has won support from Australia and England, among other countries, to run the ICC for at least three years under a revised constitution.”

On August 20, the ICC confirmed in a release that it will immediately start taking nominations for the next chair, with August 27 being the deadline for the same.

“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next Chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new Chair commencing on 1 December 2024,” the ICC stated in its release.

According to the Australian publication, Barclay was forced to resign ‘amid a $US3 billion ($4.46 billion) dispute between the governing body and its major broadcast rights holder Star’.

The ICC’s directors, according to Brettig, have been served with a reduction notice from ICC's official broadcaster, Star Sports, which wants to renegotiate the rights or possibly move to “blend and extend” the deal on revised terms for a longer period.
