James Anderson suffers groin strain ahead of Ashes

The veteran seamer walked off the field while playing for Lancashire in the County Championship

England have suffered yet another massive blow in their lead-up to the much-awaited Ashes series at home starting June 16 at Edgbaston as James Anderson is under an injury cloud.

The 40-year-old, playing for Lancashire in the County Championship, suffered a 'minor strain to his right groin' confirmed the official statement from the England Cricket Board.

The veteran seamer was playing against Somerset at Old Trafford and returned with figures of 2/16 in his 14 overs on Day one. However, he missed the remainder of the game due to injury, which ended in a draw.

While there was no official update on this till the conclusion of the game, England Board confirmed the news after the game and stated that his fitness will be assessed ahead of their historic Test against Ireland.

"His fitness will be assessed nearer to the time of the Test match against Ireland, which takes place at Lord’s starting on Thursday, June 1," ECB stated.

England will most likely be without the services of Jofra Archer for the start of the Ashes as the seamer returned early from the Indian Premier League to focus on his rehabilitation.

With Anderson also struggling to prove his fitness, the home team will be without their two key pacers heading into the marquee series.
