Jack Leach set for knee surgery

The England spinner injured his knee during the Hyderabad Test against India recently

England spinner Jack Leach has revealed that he will undergo a knee injury after sustaining an injury in Hyderabad and being ruled out of the Test series against India. While it was not considered too serious initially, the Somerset spinner has decided to go under the knife to deal with it.

"I'm going to have an operation to get the rest of the swelling out because it's not budging," Leach told BBC Radio 5 Live

"It was quite an unfortunate one. It was the second ball of the first innings in the field, so that whole game I was playing with this knee problem.

In Leach's absence, Tom Hartley, Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed were tasked with handling the spin department. However, with Rehan ruled out of the fourth and fifth Test due to personal reasons, it has left the visitors with just two spinners on the tour.

"I obviously knocked it a few times throughout that game, and it has just created a long period of recovery. I need to get the operation done, and then, hopefully, I can get back to playing cricket."

England do not play another Test till July, when they welcome West Indies to their shores, which gives Leach ample time for rehabilitation. "I'd love to have a run of playing cricket and getting into a bit of a rhythm again, and hopefully, that can happen again once I've got this sorted," he said.

Leach has played 36 Tests for England since his debut in 2018 and has scalped 126 wickets at 34.40.
